Extreme heat, severe storms in weekend forecast

BROOKHAVEN — Lincoln County is not out of summer heat yet despite leaves starting to fall from the trees. National Weather Service in Jackson warns extreme heat conditions could continue through the weekend.

The NWS issued an excessive heat warning for Lincoln County and much of Mississippi Saturday until 8 p.m. this evening. Heat stress conditions are ripe with high temperatures and heat indices forecast. Saturday’s high could reach 97 degrees while the heat index could reach 110. There is a 30 percent chance of rain this evening.

Sunday’s high is forecast to reach 100 degrees with a heat index of 110. Severe storms are also forecast to move through the area Sunday night. If temperatures reach 100 degrees tomorrow it would not come close to setting the high temperature record for Aug. 18. The record is 104 degrees set on Aug. 18, 1909.

NWS Jackson warns Lincoln County is at a marginal risk with forecasted severe storms. These storms could bring damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph and hail up to a quarter in size. The time window for these storms is from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. We will provide updates tomorrow on the risk of storms.
