BUDE – Jeff Long knew when he took over the Franklin County soccer program that a lot of work had to be done. With help from assistant coach Stephanie McCormick and some quick re-positioning of players in new places, Long transformed the Bulldogs into a soccer power.

Friday night, FCHS celebrated with district titles in both boys and girls divisions. The Lady Bulldogs collected a 4-2 double-overtime win over Natchez Cathedral.

In the boys game, FCHS ended the regular season with an undefeated 18-0-1 worksheet and a 5-2 win over Cathedral.

“Coach Long is a really good coach and he’s helped us a lot on and off the field,” said FC junior Hoby Mullins, who leads Class 3A in goals with 30.

Long’s expertise in the sport has helped give the Bulldogs a strong knowledge of the game. The players bought in and each has improved, too.

“Coach Long is the best coach I’ve had,” said senior captain Brendan Beach. “This has been an awesome season.”

Headlined by goals from Zayne Mullins, DeQuay Allen, Greg Queen, and two from Hoby Mullins, the Bulldogs flexed their offensive muscles.

On defense, goalie Trey Bailey had six saves in the win.

The Lady Bulldogs (15-3-1) used two goals by SieDriq Middleton and 11 saves from sub freshman goalie Macy Ziskin to notch the win and a district championship.

The double-overtime contest lasted nearly three hours after FC’s seniors and parents were introduced pregame for Senior Night.
