BROOKHAVEN — Reports of army worms invading fields are starting to stream in according to the Mississippi State University Extension Office in Lincoln County. Contrary to its name, Armyworms are actually caterpillars. 

Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks state the caterpillars are migratory and can cause extensive damage to standing crops, grasses and other plants. Armyworms can turn lush areas into brown dead spaces devouring the leaves and leaving just the stems behind. 

“It is important to be aware of the signs that Armyworms have invaded your property, MDWFP states. “If caught early, you will be able to address an armyworm problem before it becomes severe. Take action quickly with timely mowing, biological control, and/or insecticides.” 

With dove season 17 days away, it might be wise to check in on any crops you have planted and survey for Armyworm damage. MDWFP also recommends hunters wait until October at the earliest to plant cool season food plots.
