Community meeting to be held Thursday

Brookhaven officials will take questions from residents and hear their concerns at Thursday’s community meeting at Beulah Chapel M.B. Church.

The meeting will be at 6 p.m. at the church at 1315 Brignal Road in Brookhaven. The meeting is open to everyone and will provide an opportunity for residents to speak to city administrators. This is the second organized community meeting in recent months – the first meeting took place in February.

“I wanted to bring the board meeting to the community,” Ward 1 Alderman Randy Belcher said. He said many people aren’t able to make it to the city’s board meetings that take place every first and third Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m.

Belcher said his hope is that people leave the meeting with a better understanding of what goes on in the community and how aldermen feel about current issues facing the city. He said there are often misconceptions about some of those issues and he hopes the meetings help clear those up.

Belcher said the entire city board is invited to the event, and he has contacted Brookhaven Water and Sewer Superintended Keith Lewis about participating as well.

“The meeting is open to discuss everything,” Belcher said.

He said one of the main topics that will likely be covered is water and sewer concerns. Sewage complaints have been common, particularly in those areas the city annexed in 2007.

McNair Smith, one of the baseball complex commission members, also plans to be there to discuss concerns the community may have about construction of the facility.
