Wesson owns Enterprise on Senior Night

WESSON – Senior Night could not have been better for Wesson’s Cobras and Lady Cobras. Enterprise provided the sacrificial offering and Wesson responded with two Friday night varsity victories in the Snake Pit.
Wesson’s girls prevailed 43-36 and Wesson’s boys romped to a lopsided 90-26 win over the Yellow Jackets.
Wesson wraps up regular-season play this week. The Cobras and Lady Cobras invade East Marion Tuesday for Region 7-2A action and close out their campaign Friday night at West Lincoln.
The Region 7-2A Tournament starts Feb. 11, at East Marion.
The Lady Cobras (12-14, 5-4) maintained third place behind Bassfield and East Marion in the region race. They were sparked by Hannah McCormick’s 10 points, 9 assists and 8 rebounds. McCormick, a senior is a Yale University scholarship recipient.
“We manned up and played hard to win,” said Wesson girls coach Rusti Magee. “I always tell our girls to play hard to the very end.”
Magee, who lost 6 of her top 7 players to graduation off last year’s team, held a narrow 24-20 halftime lead over Enterprise.
The Lady Cobras came out fast in the third quarter and went on a 7-2 surge, highlighted by Corianna Young’s trey from the top of the key for a 31-22 advantage. Enterprise coach Jill Nations called a timeout to regroup her team but they never quite recovered.
In the fourth quarter, the Lady Jackets cut their deficit to 1 point, 33-32, on a trey by Markie Case with 5:39 left to play Kayla Britt and McCormick responded for Wesson with field goals in the paint for a 39-33 lead with 3:42 showing.
Enterprise (12-14, 3-6) got a game-high 14 points, 8 rebounds and 6 steals from senior guard Caroleah Brister. Center Veonka Sanders had 9 rebounds. The Lady Jackets had 23 turnovers, including 13 in the second half.
Wesson managed to overcome 12, second-half turnovers. Jashia Smith aided the win with 7 rebounds.
The Cobras (18-8, 7-2) rebounded from a lopsided, 90-46 Tuesday night road loss to No. 1 seeded Bassfield. Wesson coach Rusty Newman started a five seniors as part of the Senior Night celebration.
They responded with a first-quarter blitz that gave Wesson a 24-4 advantage. That was expanded to 47-14 at halftime.
Enterprise (7-19, 0-9), coached by John Knight, is in the depths of a massive rebuilding campaign. His young team committed a whopping 42 turnovers in the loss, including 20 the first half.
“It was great to have our seniors go out with a win,” said Newman. “I have a lot of respect for Coach Knight. His team is down this year but they still go out and play hard every game.”
Newman’s team sacked a school-record 16 treys in the blowout, many of them from NBA range. Kaleb Skinner and Patrick Lumley each sacked 3 treys in the rout. Lumley’s 15 points led 11 teammates in scoring.
Eddie McCullum made 7 steals in the win. Terry Brown had 4 rebounds and 3 steals. Cullen Greer had 5 rebounds.
Enterprise got 10 points from junior guard Forrest Scott. Patrick Scott snared 8 rebounds.
Jr. Varsity Results
Enterprise captured a JV girls game, winning 27-15. Courtney Greer’s 15 points led the way. Adrienne Byrd had 5 points and Nastacia Davis 4.`
Wesson got 7 points from Madie Coleman.
In the JV boys game, Wesson romped to a 57-24 win, paced by Eric Rhymes with 14 points and Mack Smith with 11. Anthony Jones chipped in 8 points and Austin Crow 6.
