Brown, Smith lead Co-Lin sweep of Bishop State

WESSON – Copiah-Lincoln baseball sophomores Adrian Brown and Logan Smith combined to go 9-for-14 at the plate on Sunday in a Wolfpack sweep of Bishop State on opening day in Wesson. The home team outhit their visitors from Mobile 17-8.

Freshman pitcher Cole Langdon (Point Coupee Catholic, La.) picked up the win in his first career start. The hard throwing right-hander struck out five and only gave up two hits. Bishop State scored one earned run on Langdon in his five innings of work. Freshman Tanner Jones (Pearl HS) and Miles Thomas (Clinton HS) both saw work out of the bullpen.

Smith (Loyd Star HS) was the hot man at the plate (3-3). The sophomore designated hitter put Co-Lin on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning with his 2-out RBI single.

It was two more sophomore, Tanner Parvin (Brookhaven Academy) and Austin Resser (Newton, Ks.), who combined to grow the Co-Lin lead in the second inning. Parvin reached on a double and Resser scored him with an RBI single. Parvin would pick up an RBI on a sacrifice fly in the third inning.

Brown, an All-State player as a freshman, hit two doubles that scored two runs. Jordan Antley and Stevie “Choc” Hubbard (double) also had a hit apiece for Co-Lin (2-0).

Daniel McGiboney took the loss for Bishop State, lasting 2.0 innings and giving up three earned runs. Johnathan Brown led the Wildcats (2-2) at the plate with a 2-4 effort.

Brown was even better in game two, as he knocked in six RBIs, the majority coming on a grand slam in the second inning. Redshirt freshman Jeremy Moore went 2-3 with an RBI after drawing the start in left field. Moore (Florence HS) missed the 2014 season after suffering an injury. Smith, working as a catcher in game two, went 2-4 with a double. Antley and Parvin both hit safely and had an RBI apiece.

Co-Lin never looked back after taking a 7-0 lead after three complete innings. Freshman Austin Odom (Mendenhall HS) picked up the win after pitching four innings and giving up one earned run on three hits. Odom struck out one and walked one. Freshman Austin Douglas (Simpson Academy) worked a perfect inning of relief. Sophomore Alex Smith and Wesley Watts also worked in relief.

Starter Cody Threlkeld took the loss for Bishop State after lasting two innings and giving up six runs. Gage Lockwood (2-3) led the visitors at the plate.

Co-Lin travels to New Orleans today for a 5 p.m. first pitch at Delgado Community College.
