The opening round of playoff softball begins this week for Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) member schools in the 1A-4A classifications. The larger schools in 5A-7A, such as 5A Brookhaven High, will have their first-round next week.
Here is a breakdown of who is playing and when for the area schools that are in action this week.
Loyd Star
The Hornets are 17-6 overall after dropping a 5-2 setback to West Marion on Monday. Loyd Star captured Region 7-2A with a perfect 6-0 record and will take on Pelahatchie High (12-7) in the opening round of 2A play.
Pelahatchie is coached by former Lawrence County head baseball coach Andrew Haygood.
Game one of the series is set for 2 p.m. at Pelahatchie on Friday. Game two will be hosted by Loyd Star at 11 a.m. on Saturday. If a third game is needed, it’ll be played at Loyd Star following the conclusion of game one.

Either Clarkdale or Collins awaits the winner of this series in the second round.
