Local basketball fans have long known that Southwest Mississippi Community College freshman guard Jaylen Haliburton is a guy that can score points in bunches.
On Thursday in Summit, Haliburton showed that his skills are translating to the college game, as he led the Bears with 27 points in an 89-66 win over Mississippi Delta CC.
All but three of those points came after halftime for the 6-foot-2, 165-pound alum of Brookhaven High School.
Southwest trailed 37-36 at halftime, but Halliburton came out gunning in the second half, spurred on by his head coach Corey Schmidt.
“I missed my first shot, and I thought I was going to be off in this game, but my coach said when you get those open shots, let them fly, and I did and they went in,” said Haliburton in a release by the school.
At one point, Haliburton scored 11-straight points in the second half as Southwest won for a fourth straight game and moved to 6-4 overall on the season. On the year, Haliburton is averaging 8.3 points per game.
The Bears are next in action on Saturday at Pensacola College in Florida.
