Southwest Mississippi Community College announced earlier this week that the school has found its next football coach with the hiring of MACCC veteran Les George.
George, whose specialty is coaching the offensive line, has most recently been at Holmes Community College where he also carried the title Assistant Head Coach for the Bulldogs.
Holmes has seen improvements over the last three years under head coach Marcus Wood, who hired George away from his previous job at Mississippi Gulf Coast. This season Wood, George, and Holmes finished 7-3 and made the MACCC playoffs for the first time in 22 years.
An East Central High alum who played at Gulf Coast from 2005-2006, he was on staff in Perkinston for seven seasons as an assistant coach. George was initially hired by former head coach Chad Huff and then retained when current head Bulldog Jack Wright took over.
The first collegiate coaching job for George was at Belhaven University in Jackson, where he worked for Joe Thrasher, the coach whom he played under at Bacone College (Oklahoma) to finish his playing career.
At Gulf Coast, George played for Steve Campbell, who also led programs at Central Arkansas, South Alabama, Delta State, and Southwest Mississippi during his hall-of-fame career.
George replaces former head coach Cliff Collins, who resigned after four years in Summit with a 8-28 record during that time.
George and his wife Chelsey have three daughters.
Southwest Mississippi was the first MACCC job to come open and is the first to be filled and more head coaching positions have since opened up after the Bears began hunting for their coach.
Hinds Community College is searching for its next head coach after Larry Williams announced he is stepping down. A former defensive coordinator at Copiah-Lincoln CC, Williams has been head coach in Raymond since 2017.
Williams had been the defensive coordinator at Hinds for longtime head coach Gene Murphy and ascended to the head job after Murphy retired from coaching for a second time. Hinds finished 2-7 in 2024.
There has been no official statement from Jones College, but it appears the Bobcats are also looking for a new head coach. There were reports earlier this week that Jones was moving on from head coach Steve Buckley. His bio has been removed from the school website and defensive coordinator Lytrel Pollard is listed as Interim Head Coach there now.
Buckley and the Bobcats went 5-4 last season and he’d been head coach for the last nine seasons in Ellisville.
Coahoma CC is also searching for a head coach with the recent resignation of Terrence Metcalf. Like Jones, no official release has come from the school. Metcalf, a former All-American at Ole Miss and the father of NFL wideout DK Metcalf, went 1-17 in two seasons at CCC in Clarksdale.
