It’ll be another Friday night jam packed with local games worth your viewing pleasure. Enterprise is hosting an all-Lincoln County matchup with West Lincoln, Brookhaven High is welcoming 7A heavyweights Northwest Rankin to town, and it’s homecoming at Loyd Star.

 

Enterprise (2-2) vs. West Lincoln (1-3)

7 p.m., Harry Cole Field, Hwy. 583

Enterprise will complete their trilogy against fellow Lincoln County schools when the Yellow Jackets host West Lincoln on Friday. West Lincoln, Bogue Chitto and Loyd Star all play each other as members of Region 7-2A, but for the 1A Jackets, this game is a non-division matchup.

Both teams are coming off wins as the Jackets were 40-22 victors last week on the road at Leake County. It was the first Friday for both Enterprise and West Lincoln to win on the same night since the opening week of the 2015 season.

EAC junior quarterback Landon McNickles had some video game like numbers in the win over Leake County.

McNickles completed 4-of-9 passes in the game for 101 yards. Three of those four completions went for touchdowns. On the ground, he was like Michael Vick in Madden 2004, rushing the ball 12 times for 130 yards and two more touchdowns.

EAC senior Gavin Regouffre caught two passes for 42 yards and two scores. Sophomore AJ Raiford had one grab for the Jackets that went for 50 yards and a touchdown for coach Trey Woodard

Junior Ayden Arevalo rushed 13 times for 70 yards and a touchdown and junior Daylan Barden added 90 yards on the ground on 11 carries.

Nick Harris led the Yellow Jacet defense with 11 tackles. Nick Harris, Parker Harris, and Preston Mooneyham each recorded a sack in the win for Enterprise.

The last time these two schools met on the field it went as a 33-0 win for West Lincoln in 2019. The 2020 contest was called also a forfeit win for the Bears and coming into the game they’ve won four straight in the all-time series that EAC leads 18-7.

West Lincoln is coming off a 40-24 victory over Salem. The Bears outgained the visitors from Walthall County by a 341-267 combined yards advantage.

Junior quarterback Caden Seay went 1-of-3 passing for 14 yards, one touchdown and one interception in the win over Salem for West Lincoln. On the ground, Seay rushed 10 times for 43 yards and two touchdowns.

Sophomore Layton Sullivan caught the touchdown pass from Seay for a 14-yard score.

The Bears had two ball carriers go over the 100-yard mark in the game with junior Tyler Hall leading the way as he gained 153 yards on 19 carries. Hall averaged 8.1 yards per carry and scored one touchdown. Sophomore Braden Hamm also went over the century mark with 108 yards on 17 carries. Hamm scored two rushing touchdowns.

Kicker Gabe Gennaro went 4-of-5 on extra-point kick attempts for the Bears and also had a punt go for 33-yards.

Sophomore linebacker Brody Dillon led the West Lincoln defense with 16 tackles against Salem. Hamm had nine tackles while Sullivan and Ryan Purdy made six tackles each for coach Brad Bland.

 

Brookhaven High (2-2) vs. Northwest Rankin (3-1)

7 p.m., King Field, Brookhaven

The non-division portion of the 2023 Brookhaven High schedule finishes up on Friday with a visit from the 7A Northwest Rankin Cougars.

NWR handed Madison Central its first loss of the season last week in a 28-21 ballgame. The Cougars from Flowood beat Germantown 35-28, Clinton High 21-14 and lost 27-24 to Ocean Springs before bouncing back to get the win over Madison Central.

Brookhaven High and coach Tucker Peavey are 2-2 this season after losing 24-7 last week at McComb High.

The McComb defense was able to keep the Panther offense in check as senior running back Xavier Gayten ran for a season low 60 yards.

Kenan Quinn led the BHS defense with seven tackles as the 24-point total for McComb was the lowest of the season for a team that came in averaging 46 points per game.

 

Loyd Star (3-1) vs. Stringer (1-3)

7 p.m., W.E. “Sambo” Smith Field, Hwy. 550

It’s homecoming week in Hornetville as Loyd Star prepares to host the Stringer Red Devils. Loyd Star head coach Adam Smith and his Hornets are off to a 3-1 start after getting a 31-28 road win at Richton High last week.

Stringer, located in Jasper County, is an attendance center that fluctuates back and forth between the 1A and 2A classes. The Red Devils are currently a 1A program and began the season with a 48-14 loss to 3A Seminary before bouncing back to beat Pelahatchie 20-18. Last week Stringer lost 27-6 to Puckett and the week before they lost 27-7 to Nanih Waiya.

The series between the schools began in 2015 and this will be the seventh meeting of all-time. Stringer won the first four times the teams met, but Loyd Star has won two in a row including a 37-0-win last year in Jasper County.

 

Bogue Chitto (2-2) vs. Puckett (4-0)

7 p.m., Troy Smith Field, Hwy. 51

Bogue Chitto is looking to bounce back from a 36-34 road loss at Ethel last week. In that game, the Bobcats got 136 yards rushing from senior Easton Sartin. Sartin carried the ball 17 times and scored once on the ground. Coach Gareth Sartin also got rushing scores from Jayden Poole and Randy Crisler.

Sartin’s team can’t dwell on the loss long as they are hosting an unbeaten Puckett team on Friday. The Wolves from Rankin County started the season off with a forfeit win over Mount Olive. Since then, they’ve beaten McLaurin 47-0, West Lincoln 43-7 and Stringer 27-6.

Bogue Chitto has won two straight in its series against Puckett that stretches back to 1987. The Bobcats won 27-7 last year at home and 13-7 in 2021 at Puckett.

 

Brookhaven Academy (0-5) at Salem (0-4)

7 p.m., Wildcat Field,

Walthall County

For the first time in program history, the Brookhaven Academy Cougars will step outside the MAIS ranks to take on an MHSAA program.

Cougar fans will caravan to Walthall County on Friday to watch their team take on the 1A Salem Wildcats.

Salem comes into the matchup with a 40-game losing streak. BA will play at Simpson Academy (2-3) next week before wrapping up the 2023 season with three straight home games against Silliman Institute (3-2), Parklane Academy (3-2), and Amite School Center (0-5).

 

Lawrence County (1-3) vs. Tylertown (1-3)

7 p.m., Cougar Field, Monticello

Coach Jesse Anderson and his Lawrence County Cougars picked up their first win of the season last week with a 47-21 triumph over the Magee Trojans.

LC led 20-0 at halftime and blew the game open with three more scores in the final quarter.

Senior running back Ahamad Hardy carried the ball 12 times for 188 yards and one touchdown for the Cougars. Senior quarterback Kannon Cato had 11 carries for 191 yards and three scores. The Cougars also got rushing scores from Markavion Owens, Wesley Harris and Lauria McDuffey in the win.

Tylertown and Lawrence County are tied 9-9 in head-to-head matchups all-time. Last week the THS Chiefs lost 55-36 to 7A Harrison Central. Tylertown also lost 28-18 to Center Point High from Birmingham and 23-21 to perennial 2A title contender Scott Central. The lone win thus far for Tylertown was a 42-14 thrashing of Jim Hill.

Lawrence County beat Tylertown 56-20 last season to snap a five-game winning streak by the Chiefs in the series between the schools.

 

Wesson (4-0) at Mize (2-2)

7 p.m., Charles Ray Lee Field, Mize

Wesson and coach Jeremy Loy look to keep the hot star to the 2023 season going with a road matchup at Mize. The Cobras crushed Lumberton 40-7 last week at home.

Cole Gibson, Wyatt Garrett and Deshawn Smith all tossed one touchdown each for Wesson in the win against Lumberton. O’Mari Johnson caught two of those scoring passes as he finished the night with three catches for 112 yards and two touchdowns. Caleb Chase also caught one pass that went for a 62-yard score.

Garrett also rushed for a touchdown as did senior running back Zevantae Stapleton. Johnson returned a kickoff 82-yards for another score.

Mize holds a 20-7 advantage all-time in matchups against the Cobras. The Bulldogs from Smith County have won three in a row in the series including a 42-33 victory last year.

So far in 2023, Mize has losses to Taylorsville (45-27) and Raleigh (18-7) and wins over Mount Olive (35-0) and Enterprise-Clarke (21-0).
