Delta State at Chowan University
Saturday, Sept. 9
12 p.m. CT, Murfreesboro, NC
Delta State will play the Baptists from Clinton later in the season, but on Saturday the Statesmen are taking on some North Carolina Baptists from Chowan University.
Nate McMillan, longtime player and coach in the NBA, is an alum of the school. That’s about the most interesting thing on Wikipedia about Chowan, a school with an enrollment somewhere around 1,000.
Chowan lost 41-0 last week at Barton College. Delta State won 48-20 last week at Missouri University of Science and Technology.
You don’t need Vegas to tell you that Delta State will be heavy favorites on the road.
Mississippi College at Midwestern State
Saturday, Sept. 9
7 p.m. CT, Wichita Falls, Tx.
If you’ve ever turned out of Dallas with the goal of hitting Amarillo by morning, then you’ve passed through Wichita Falls, Texas.
That’ll be the destination this week for the Mississippi College Choctaws as they take on the Midwestern State Mustangs.
Midwestern State plays in one of the toughest NCAA Division II football leagues, the Lone Star Conference.
The LSC is mostly schools from Texas, such as Midwestern State, Angelo State, Texas A&M-Kingsville, UT Permian Basin, and West Texas A&M. They’ve also got two teams from a neighboring state in Eastern New Mexico and Western New Mexico.
Then there are two schools that aren’t from neighboring states in Central Washington and Western Oregon. If UCLA and USC can join the Big Ten, then schools from Washington and Oregon playing in the Lone Star Conference makes sense.
MC beat Keiser University 17-14 last week in West Palm Beach, Florida. A fun compare and contrast topic for the Composition I students on the team at MC would be writing about the differences they noticed in Palm Beach and Wichita Falls.
Midwestern State lost 38-7 last week on the road at Colorado State-Pueblo.
Belhaven at Lyon
Saturday, Sept. 9
6 p.m. CT, Batesville, Ark.
The Lyon Scots and the Belhaven Blazers will meet in a Presbyterian grudge match on Saturday in Batesville, Arkansas.
Division III member schools, both teams are 1-0 after the first week of the season. Lyon beat Grinnell College 18-12 last week while Belhaven blew out its Methodist rivals from Millsaps by a 47-7 final score.
Lyon also won its season opener last year and then lost nine games in a row. Belhaven went 8-2 in 2022 and will be the favorites in this matchup.
Millsaps vs. McMurry University
Saturday, Sept. 9
1 p.m. CT, Jackson
The McMurry War Hawks are making the 600-mile trek from Abilene, Texas to Jackson, Mississippi in order to match up with the Millsaps Majors on Saturday.
Last season, the Majors won in Abilene by a 27-13 advantage. Millsaps quarterback Brody Davis went 20-of-33 for 188 yards and two scores in that win.
McMurry lost 20-19 last week against Birmingham-Southern in Little Rock, Arkansas.
