2023 Daily Leader All-Area Girls’ Soccer Team

The DL All-Area Soccer Team is made up of players from Brookhaven High, Brookhaven Academy, Bogue Chitto, Loyd Star, West Lincoln, Wesson and Lawrence County

Maryanna Boyte,

Brookhaven High

A senior, Boyte stepped up to lead the BHS offensive attack this season for the Panthers (10-9) and coach Dustin Bairfield. A East Mississippi Community College soccer signee, Boyte scored a team best 19 goals this season and was also in on four assists as Brookhaven High qualified for the first round of the MHSAA 5A playoffs.

Abby Burnette,

Loyd Star

A junior, Burnette was again a big-time difference maker on the pitch for the Hornets (18-4) this season. In being named All-Area for the third straight year, she scored a career best 30 goals and had her foot in on a team best 19 assists for coach Jordan Lea. A standout athlete that also excels at softball, Burnette has scored 76 career goals at Loyd Star.

Rylea Carney,

Lawrence County

A senior, Carney was a veteran presence this season on the pitch for the Cougars (4-16-1). She played defensive midfield and forward for coach John Floyd and a Lawrence County team that qualified for the MHSAA 4A playoffs. Scored two goals and was in on two assists for the Cougars.

Lilly Kate Channell,

Wesson

A sophomore, Channell showed she’ll be a player that opposing defenses will need to key in on in the future for Cobra (4-8) soccer. Uses her speed and quickness as an offensive threat for Wesson coach Amanda Bergeron. A three-sport athlete who also starts in volleyball and softball at Wesson.

Reagan Fortenberry,

Brookhaven Academy

A junior, was a player that opponents had to focus on stopping from getting touches this season for the Cougars (14-4-1). In her second season of soccer, exploded for a team best 24 goals to help lead her team to a district title under coach Alex Brown. A starter for the state championship winning basketball team, she was also in on four assists this season in soccer.

Cara Jarancik,

West Lincoln

A senior, Jarancik was the heart and soul of a West Lincoln (14-6) squad that qualified for the playoffs this season as the third placed team out of Region 7-2A. A Copiah-Lincoln soccer signee, Jarancik was previously tabbed as an All-Area selection as a sophomore. Scored a team best 26 goals while also being in on nine assists for coach Dane Hodges.

Mallory Martin,

Brookhaven Academy

A junior, Martin did a ton to create offense and keep possession this season for a Brookhaven Academy (14-4-1) team that made the playoffs. A repeat All-Area selection, Martin scored nine goals and was in on two assists for coach Alex Brown. Her play was pivotal in helping the Cougars finish as the top team in their MAIS district and thereby earning a home playoff match for a second straight season.

Deanna Lofton,

West Lincoln,

A senior, Lofton did all the little things right for West Lincoln coach Dane Hodges and the Bears (14-6). She shined especially bright in the midfield as Lofton played only soccer this season after splitting her time with basketball last season. Lofton responded by soring 20 goals and dishing out seven assists while also earning All-Region honors that included most valuable midfielder.

Ainsley Orr,

Brookhaven Academy

A sophomore, Orr had big gloves to fill as a first-year starting goal keeper and she embraced that challenge with great success for Brookhaven Academy (14-4-1). Made 52 saves and gave up just 13 goals this season as she had an experienced defense working in front of her. Had a five match streak where she didn’t give up a goal and ended the season with 12 shutouts for coach Alex Brown.

Chloe Rodriquez,

Loyd Star

A sophomore, Rodriquez is one of the best on-ball defenders in the area and played a crucial role in slowing down the opposition for the Hornets (18-4) this season. Rodriquez led Loyd Star with 197 steals this season as the team made the third round of the MHSAA Class I playoffs. Was also in on a goal and an assist this season for coach Jordan Lea.

Maddy Tarver,

Bogue Chitto

An eighth grader, Tarver already has tons of experience as a goalkeeper for the Bobcats (5-9-1). Her play was a big part of BC and coach Shane Nippe improving the win total by three this season, including the first ever victory over Wesson in program history.

Maelee Thibodeaux, Brookhaven High

A senior, Thibodeaux rebounded from a season ending injury as a junior to return as the primary goalkeeper for the Panthers (10-9) this season. A Copiah-Lincoln soccer signee and repeat All-Area selection, she was part of the Panthers posting seven shutouts this season. Also spent some time in the midfield for coach Dustin Bairfield, where she scored four goals and had one assist.
