Here’s a look at recent athletic results from Copiah-Lincoln Community College.

 

Baseball

Coach Clay Smith’s baseball team ended the 2022 season with a 6-2 win over Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in Perkinston on Tuesday. The victory game in the second game of a doubleheader as MGCCC won the opener 13-1.

Brookhaven Academy alum Tanner Watts pitched the win for the Wolves in the finale as he went five innings and gave up six hits while striking out five Bulldogs.

Sophomore first baseman Kenner Bizot (Wesson) also made the most of his final game representing CLCC as his smacked a two-run home run in the top of the third inning to put Co-Lin up 4-1. It was the fifth bomb of the season for Bizot, who’ll play next season at Mississippi College.

The injury bug has eaten up the Co-Lin lineup at times this season, but Smith — in his ninth year at his alma mater — was happy to see his sophomores go out with a win.

“I am very proud of the way that our guys showed some fight during this series,” said Smith in a release by the school. “It was good to finish a tough year with a win.”

Co-Lin concludes the season with a 12-31 record.

 

Softball

In Wesson on Tuesday, the Co-Lin softball team wrapped up their regular season with a sweep of Mississippi Gulf Coast CC via 8-2 and 7-2 wins.

It was also the occasion of Sophomore Day as Co-Lin honored a 10-player class that have put up some impressive numbers during their time in Wesson.

The sophomore class of Madi Miller (Brookhaven High), Josie Meggs (Kosciusko High), Bridgette Talbert (North Pike), Malori Cade (Loyd Star), Cera Blanchard (Metairie, La.), Bela Dekovic (Belle Chase, La.), Alli Albritton (Parklane Academy), Faith Ashley (Pisgah High), Shelbi Maxwell (Wesson) and Madalyn Wilkinson (Germantown High) are currently a combined 69-18 in their two years at CLCC.

Coach Meleah Howard’s team now waits on final seeding ahead of the MACCC State Tournament that will take place next week at Jones College in Ellisville.

Co-Lin knows that they’ll be the no. 2 seed behind Jones but won’t know their first-round opponent until the rest of league play concludes this week.

 

Golf

Former Co-Lin softball coach and current golf coach Allen Kent saw his team finish third overall in the recent NJCAA Division II Gulf District Tournament in Holly Springs at Kirkwood National Golf Club.

Mississippi Gulf Coast and Meridian finished ahead of the Wolves, but Kent’s team will send three players to the NJCAA Division II National Tournament later this year.

Qualifying for the national tourney at Twin Hills Country Club in Joplin, Missouri from Co-Lin were Tanner Harrison (Northwest Rankin), Alex Navarro (Valencia, Spain) and Navid Mousavi (Castellon, Spain). All three are freshmen and will play in the tourney that runs from May 17-20.

Sophomore Ty Nelson (Lawrence County) and freshman Chandler Byrd (Wesson) also competed for the Wolves in Holly Springs.

 

Tennis

CLCC tennis coach Dana Hale had four of her players honored recently by the MACCC for their play this season. Sophomore Morgyn Brister (Loyd Star) and freshman Valeria Rodriguez (Bradenton, Fla.) were named All-Conference from the women’s team which finished with a 11-8 record in 2022.

The men’s doubles team of sophomores Julian Parada and Julian Toloza finished as conference champs and in doing so earned All-Conference honors and a bid to the NJCAA Division I National Tournament. The pair — both natives of Bogota, Columbia — will head to Tyler, Texas for the national tourney that runs from May 16-20.
