Playoff roundup: Loyd Star, West Lincoln play for titles tonight

Region 7-2A Tournament at Amite County High School
The West Lincoln and Loyd Star girls are set to meet for a fourth time this season when they play in the Region 7-2A tournament championship at 6 p.m. tonight at Amite County High School in Liberty.
West Lincoln (16-8) is playing for a fifth-straight tourney title and it’s the third year in a row for them to meet up with Loyd Star (12-11) in the championship game.
The Loyd Star boys (12-11) are also playing for a tournament title when they meet the homestanding Amite County Trojans (15-8) at 7:30 p.m.
LS won the boys’ region tournament last season, Amite County won it in 2020 and Loyd Star won it in 2019. Amite County beat the Hornets 44-41 on Jan. 11 and 49-38 on Jan. 28.
First-year West Lincoln girls’ coach Alissa Adams and her Lady Bears made the championship with a 33-27 win over East Marion. Loyd Star beat Bogue Chitto 41-37 in the other semifinal on Tuesday. It was the fourth game between the Lincoln County rivals as BC had beaten Loyd Star 37-33 just four days before.

Both Bogue Chitto teams are coached by Marc Howard and they’ll both see action today in the consolation games. The BC Lady Bobcats (12-12) get things started in Liberty with a 3 p.m. game against East Marion (12-15).
The boy’s consolation has Bogue Chitto (12-11) taking on East Marion (11-13) at 4:30 p.m. today. Amite County beat the Bobcats 59-31 on Tuesday in the first round.
The teams that play in the championship games will host first-round games next week in the MHSAA 2A State Tournament while the teams that play in the consolation games will play on the road in the opening round.
MHSAA Region 8-1A Tournament at Richton High School
The Enterprise boys’ basketball team had their season ended Monday at the Region 8-1A Tournament in Richton. The Yellow Jackets (6-14) lost 47-36 to the Salem Wildcats (13-10) in an elimination game.
The EAC girls also dropped an opening-round game by a 38-18 final score to Richton (8-13). The Lady Jackets (10-8) will meet Salem (1-17) in a 5:30 p.m. consolation game. With only four girls’ teams in the region, EAC moves on to the MHSAA 1A State Tournament next week, regardless of what happens against Salem.
Shane Adams coaches both Enterprise teams and his girls’ squad beat Salem 42-28 last week.
MHSAA Region 7-3A Tournament at Wilkinson County
Wesson’s boys’ basketball season is now complete after the Cobras (4-15) lost 84-70 against Jefferson County on Tuesday in Woodville. Rusty Newman coaches the Cobra’s boy team and Michelle Nunnery leads Wesson’s girls’ team.
The Lady Cobras play Port Gibson today at 4 p.m. in a semifinal game. In the first round, Wesson whipped Jefferson County 60-30. Nunnery’s team is now 16-8 on the season.
