WL Bears win region tennis title; Loyd Star runners up

The West Lincoln Bears captured the Region 6-1A/2A tennis tournament Tuesday at the Brookhaven Country Club.

The Bears — coached by Karen Rogers — move on to play in the opening round of the state tournament. They’ll host a home match on Monday. Loyd Star — coached by Meredith Miller — finished as runners-up and will play on the road Monday at Sacred Heart in Hattiesburg.

The team championship concludes April 26 at Parham Bridges in Jackson.

First or second place finishers also qualified for the individual tournament that takes place April 29-May 1 in Oxford.

The team of Jonathan Mathis and Kamren Clark (West Lincoln) won the boys doubles title by defeating Cam Harveston and Payne Walker (Loyd Star). Both teams will advance to Oxford.

The girls duo of Elizabeth Stogner and Paige Shedd (West Lincoln) defeated Maggie Flowers and Haley McCullough (Loyd Star) in the finals. Both teams qualified for the induvial tournament in Oxford.

The mixed doubles team of Gavin Thomas and Tessa Smith (Loyd Star) won their bracket on Monday and advanced to Oxford as did their opponents Tyler Leggett and Britany Barnett (Enterprise).

Will McCullough (Loyd Star) moved on to qualify for the bracket in Oxford after beating Caleb Myers (West Lincoln) in the boys’ singles championship. Myers also qualifies for the state individual tournament.

Morgyn Brister (Loyd Star) captured the girls’ single title and advanced to Oxford as did her opponent Ja’Taryah Ferguson (Bogue Chitto).
