Here is a look at how area teams faired in the first round of the playoffs on Tuesday night.

Region champ Cougars take care of Pass Pirates

Coming off a Region 7-4A championship last week, the Lawrence County Cougars used a second quarter run to put the Pass Christian Pirates in a hole on the way to a 62-48 Cougar victory in Monticello Tuesday night.

There may be no hotter team in the 4A south than coach Pat Bridges and his Cougar (17-12) team.

After losing at home on Jan. 22 to Forrest County AHS by a 51-44 score, the Cougars have now won eight in a row, including a 58-44 beating of FCAHS in the region tournament finals.

The Cougars only led 12-11 after the first quarter on Tuesday, before outscoring the Pirates (8-21) by eight points in the second quarter. The Cougars led 49-30 after three quarters.

Junior Zavion Bridges led the Cougars with 15 points and senior Darrell Newsome chipped in 13 points. Senior K.D. Gordon added 11 points and freshman Jaheim Bell scored seven. Senior Eddie Pierre and senior Kam Barnes both scored six points apiece. Gordon grabbed a team high six rebounds while making four steals. Newsome handed out five assists.

LC moves on to host Lanier (16-14) on Saturday for a second-round showdown. The Bulldogs pulled an upset in their playoff opener when they went on the road and whipped Quitman (22-8) 58-24.

The Bulldogs have played a demanding schedule with losses to 6A Meridian, 5A Forest Hill, 6A Brandon, 5A Callaway, 6A Murrah, 5A Ridgeland, and 4A powerhouses Florence (22-6) and Raymond (22-5).

North Forrest races past Bogue Chitto

The North Forrest High Eagles (23-4) moved on to the second round of the postseason with a 75-30 win over Bogue Chitto (7-22) on Tuesday. The Eagles led 47-7 at halftime.

Bogue Chitto coach Marvin McGee returns plenty of experience next season as freshman Markee McGee, junior Josh Thomas, sophomore Tristan Buffington, junior Lincoln Collins, and junior Zach Upkins all saw extensive action this season for the Bobcats.
