Baseball roundup: Bogue Chitto, Enterprise, Wesson all sweep into 2nd round

Here is a look at how local teams fared in the MHSAA baseball playoffs that began last week. At press time, Loyd Star and St. Andrew’s were tied 1-1 in their 2A three-game playoff series, with the concluding game to be played on Tuesday night.
Bogue Chitto
The Bobcats (12-10) are on to round two after sweeping Raleigh (9-5, 10-7) in the opening round of 2A action.
Coach Seth Avants and his Bobcats will take on North Forrest (15-7) in the second round. Game one is scheduled for Bogue Chitto at 7 p.m. on Friday. Game two will be played at 7 p.m. at NFHS in Eatonville, outside of Hattiesburg. If a third game is needed, it’ll be played back at BC on Monday.
Raleigh led 2-1 early in game one, before a five-run fifth inning broke things open for the Cat at home. Junior pitcher Tripp McCaffrey struck out 11 batters for Bogue Chitto. Hayden Avants had four RBIs in the game one win.
In game two, Bogue Chitto got nine strikeouts from Tucker Kyzar on the mound. Landon Wright had a five RBI performance in game two.
Enterprise
The Yellow Jackets (18-10) booked a trip to the second round of the 1A bracket with a sweep of the Simmons Blue Devils (21-0, 16-0) in the first round.
Coach Cass Brister and the Jackets will play against Taylorsville (15-10) in the second round. Game one is at Taylorsville on Friday and EAC will host game two at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Pitcher Kelly Burgess had a perfect three inning outing in the opener against Simmons, striking out eight of the nine batters he faced. Burgess, Rossen Falvey and Ripken Powell each had three RBIs at the plate in that win.
Ryder Martin and Haygan Floyd combined for a three inning no hitter in game two. Floyd, Prewitt Falvey, and Jiles Williams had two RBIs apiece in game two.
Wesson
The Cobras (17-7) cruised into the 3A second round with two easy wins over Jefferson Davis County (16-1, 18-0).
Next up for coach Vance Windom and his squad is a second-round matchup against the Saint Stanislaus Rock-a-chaws (18-10).
Game one is at Wesson on Friday at 6:30 p.m. Game two will be played at Saint Stanislaus in Bay St. Louis. If a third game is needed, it’ll be played on Monday at Wesson.
Senior pitcher Wyatt Garrett, a Southwest Mississippi Community College signee, struck out seven and walked one in the game one win for Wesson over JDC. Garrett gave up one hit and one earned run. Junior Aiden Wallace led the Cobras with three RBIs in that victory.
Parker Brooks struck out two and gave up two hits in earning the game two win for Wesson. Blayten Windom led Wesson in game two at the plate with a four RBI effort.
Brookhaven High
Bracket play for 5A programs like Brookhaven High kicks off this week. The Panthers (11-13) and coach Matt White will take on the Vancleave High Bulldogs (24-5) in the opening round.
Vancleave will host game one on Friday at 7 p.m. Game two will be played at Moyer Field on Saturday at 6 p.m. If a third game is needed to decide the series, it’ll be hosted by Vancleave next week.
Loyd Star
Coach Jared Britt and his Hornets (15-12) kept their season alive with a thrilling 8-7 win on Saturday. St. Andrew’s Episcopal had taken game one of the 2A playoff series by an 11-5 final score on Thursday.
Mason Smith drew a bases loaded Walk to send the winning run home in the bottom of the seventh for the Hornets.
Both teams had 10 hits in the game, with Jacob Smith and Mason Smith leading the way for LS with two RBIs each.
Riley Case picked up the pitching win for the Hornets after throwing the first five innings before giving way to Paxton Zumbro.
West Lincoln
The 2025 season wrapped up for West Lincoln with two losses to Puckett High (20-0, 11-1) in the first round of the 2A postseason.
The Bears finished 14-11 for first year coach Chris Lyle. Lyle is departing West Lincoln at the end of the school year for a job in Alabama. He’ll be replaced by former West Lincoln head coach David Gilbert. Gilbert served as an assistant this season for Lyle and was recently approved by the board to be head coach again at West Lincoln beginning next season.
Lawrence County
The 2025 season wrapped up for Lawrence County with two losses to Columbia High (16-1, 5-2) in the first round of the 4A postseason.
The Cougars finished 12-12 under first year head coach Gage Daley.
