The baseball postseason begins this week for Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) schools in the 1A through 4A classifications. 5A Brookhaven High will be off this week before starting their playoffs next week. Here is a preview of upcoming games in our area.
Bogue Chitto
Coach Seth Avants and the Bobcats have had a season to remember as they knocked Loyd Star from the top spot in Region 7-2A.
First off in the postseason for the Bobcats (11-10) is a matchup against the Raleigh Lions (8-15). The first game at BC will be played on Thursday at 7 p.m. Raleigh will host game two on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
If a third game is needed, it’ll be played at BC on Saturday at 7 p.m.
The winner of this series will play the winner of North Forrest (13-7) or Scott Central (5-20).
West Lincoln
Likewise, it’s been a year filled with good times for first year West Lincoln head coach Chris Lyle and the Bears.
West Lincoln (15-9) grabbed the second spot in Region 7-2A by winning two out of three (8-5 win, 13-12 win, 10-5 loss) last week against Loyd Star.
The Bears want to keep the good times rolling for as long as they can and the first roadblock in their postseason path is a three-game series against Puckett High (16-7).
West Lincoln is scheduled to host Puckett at 6 p.m. on Thursday and then the teams will play game two at Puckett on Saturday at 2 p.m.
If a third game is needed, it’ll take place at West Lincoln on Monday at 6 p.m.
The winner of this series will play either Mize or Bay Springs in the second round.
Loyd Star
The Hornets and coach Jared Britt are in the unfamiliar position of being the lower seeded team when their first-round matchup starts this week against a familiar foe in St. Andrew’s Episcopal.
The Hornets (14-11) play at SAE on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. LS is scheduled to host game two on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. If a third game is needed, St. Andrew’s (19-8) will host it on Monday at 6:30 p.m.
Enterprise
Coach Cass Brister and the Enterprise Yellow Jackets (15-10) will be prohibitive favorites this week against the Simmons High Blue Devils (6-6) in the MHSAA 1A playoffs.
The teams played last year in the playoffs, two games won 14-0 and 20-0 by Enterprise.
Ethel (5-16) or Taylorsville (11-10) awaits the winner of this series in the 1A second round.
EAC will host Simmons on Friday at 6 p.m. for game one and will play in Hollandale on Saturday at 12 p.m. against the Blue Devils.
Wesson
The Cobras and coach Vance Windom are 15-6 overall and were winners of Region 7-3A with a perfect 8-0 record.
At press time, it’s looking like Wesson will play Jefferson Davis County in the first round of 3A action.
The teams will play a doubleheader on Friday in Wesson, with first pitch coming at 3 p.m. The winner of the McLaurin/Saint Stanislaus series awaits Wesson or JDC in the second round.
Lawrence County
First-year head coach Gage Daley and Lawrence County Cougars are 12-10 overall and will take on Columbia High (15-10) in what should be a highly competitive three-game 4A playoff series.
Lawrence County will host game one on Friday at 7 p.m. Columbia hosts game two on Saturday at 7 p.m. If a third game is needed, it’ll be played in Monticello on Monday at 7 p.m.
