Wesson senior Cotton Westbrook put a bow on his high school athletic career recently by taking first place in the 198-pound class at the MHSAA 3A State Powerlifting Meet.

A longtime standout linebacker on the gridiron who’ll next be joining the team at Copiah-Lincoln Community College, Westbrook set a new 3A championship meet record with his 350-pound effort on the bench press. His three-lift total went for 1,350-pounds.

Westbrook squatted 485 pounds and dead lifted 515 pounds to clinch the title. Westbrook finished second as a junior at the state meet in the 198-pound class.

Jeremy Loy serves as head powerlifting coach at Wesson.

“Cotton is the most dedicated lifter I have ever seen,” said Loy about his champ. “He is a goal setter and when he sets a goal, he does whatever it takes to achieve it. Last year he got beat on a tie breaker for the state championship. Since then his goal has been to win it all and set a new bench press record. He did both and dominated the field.”
