Loyd Star soccer senior Chloe Rodriquez this week became the latest part of the Hornet program to take her talents to the next level, as she signed a letter-of-intent to play women’s soccer next year at Southwest Mississippi Community College in Summit.
The physical, 5-foot-4 Rodriquez didn’t take up soccer until she came to Loyd Star, but her steady improvement has been a big boost to a program that has been among the best in MHSAA Class I soccer in recent years.
Playing in the defensive backfield when she was younger and becoming an important goal scorer as a senior, Rodriquez showed her versatility by scoring a career-high 22 goals this season. She was also in on five assists for a Hornet team that finished 16-5 and reached the second round of the postseason.
It was a career year for Rodriquez, who scored just four goals while playing defense the season prior.
“It’s incredible to think about how far Chloe has come,” said Loyd Star soccer coach Jordan Lea. “She transferred in her ninth-grade year having never kicked a soccer ball and today, here we stand and she’s signing a scholarship to play soccer at Southwest. She is the epitome of working hard in practice to improve. Any player that wants to see what it takes can look at Chloe for an example. Because of her work ethic, she will do great things at Southwest. They’re getting a good one.”
