Spring Break baseball roundup — BA, Brookhaven High, West Lincoln each pick up 2 wins

The campus of Southwest Mississippi Community College in Summit has been ground zero for high school baseball this week as teams from all over the area have played in a Spring Break showcase event put on by the Bears. Here is a recap of the action involving area schools.

Brookhaven Academy and head coach Randy Spring moved to 6-7 on the season as the Cougars picked up a 10-0 win over Copiah Academy on Monday and then went 1-1 on Tuesday with a 5-0 win over Amite School Center and a 9-4 loss to Cathedral School.

Sophomore pitcher Carter Palmer threw six innings in the start for BA and pitched a 1-hitter. Palmer struck out 12 and walked two in throwing 107 pitches. Junior Walt Smith closed out the final inning by holding the Colonels hitless.

Smith smacked a triple at the plate while sophomore Tucker Tarver and freshman Paxton Leggett each drilled a double for the Cougars. Smith has a team high three RBIs as the leadoff batter in the order.

It was the second matchup of the season for BA against Copiah (3-11) and first year head coach Colby Beach as the Colonels defeated the Cougars 6-4 on March 3 in Gallman.

The game against Amite School Center was the third of the season for Brookhaven Academy, all wins for the Cougars.

Tarver doubled again against ASC and Leggett had a two-hit day at the plate as did senior Liam Magee.

Senior Carter Case started on the mound for BA and struck out five while walking four in six innings. Case scattered four hits while throwing a shutout win.

The matchup against Cathedral School was the second in four days for the schools, as BA won at home 12-2 on Friday against the Green Wave.

BA outhit Cathedral 12-7 in the loss but couldn’t string together hits when they needed them and were also undone by three errors in the field as Cathedral led 6-1 through six complete innings.

Brookhaven Academy will begin district play on Tuesday by hosting Columbia Academy (9-6). The schools will then meet on Friday in Columbia for a varsity doubleheader.

 

Brookhaven High

Brookhaven High and coach Matt White are 7-4 this season after beating Wesson 6-4 and Enterprise 6-1 on Thursday in Summit.

BHS gets division play started on Tuesday by hosting Florence High. The schools will play a varsity double header on Friday at Florence. 

The Wesson game was time-limited to five innings, as the Cobras scored two in the top of the first and Brookhaven High answered with four runs in the bottom of the first. 

Senior catcher Griffin Smith hit a double and had a two-RBI performance at the plate for Brookhaven High. Junior Dreamus Harron Jr. hit a triple and also had a two RBI day in the win over Wesson.

Senior Drew Nelson struck out five in earning the pitching start and he was relieved by freshman Landon Newman.

The win over Enterprise also went five innings. Senior pitcher Brayden Wilson shined on the mound for BHS, giving up one hit and walking five, striking out five and giving up an unearned run.

Junior Kelly Burgess got the only hit of the game for EAC in the loss.

Wilson helped his own cause with a double and RBI. DJ Washington and Harron also drove in a run each for BHS in the win over Enterprise.

White’s team has battled serious injury issues this year and is getting healthier as division play approaches.

 

West Lincoln

The West Lincoln Bears and first year coach Chris Lyles are also riding high after going 2-1 on the week. West Lincoln now sits 7-4 overall. 

The Bears lost 11-8 to open the week on Monday against North Pike. NP ran out to a 10-0 lead after three innings, but West Lincoln battled back to score seven in the fourth of a game that was time limited to five innings.

The WL bats stayed hot as they then won 17-2 over Port Gibson at home on Tuesday and then went back to Summit to get a 14-2 win against Salem on Thursday.

West Lincoln got a double apiece from Aden Purvis, Brody Dillon, and Ben Segrest against North Pike. Leadoff batter Gabe Gennaro hit a triple and drove in two runs in that game for WL.

In the win against Port Gibson, junior pitcher Jackson Smith gave up two hits in two innings and struck out four. Dillon struck out two in one inning of relief work.

Dillon, Caden Seay, and Korben Altman all doubled in the win. Smith also drove in two runs to help his cause at the plate.

West Lincoln fell behind Salem 1-0 after the first inning on Thursday, but took control with a four run second inning to cruise to the win. Altman and Seay doubled in that victory. Seay, batting leadoff, drove in three runs. 

Segrest and Gennaro split time on the mound in the win, giving up a combined five hits and striking out a combined 10 batters.

West Lincoln will be off until hosting Centreville Academy on March 21.

 

Enterprise

Enterprise and head coach Cass Brister are 5-8 overall after seeing their five-game winning streak snapped by a 6-1 loss to Brookhaven High. The Yellow Jackets had previously gotten wins over Wesson, East Marion, North Forrest, and Richton during their streak.

Haygan Floyd struck out five and hit a double with an RBI in a 7-1 win over North Forrest on March 8. AJ Raiford also had a two RBI effort in that victory.

EAC also got an 18-5 win over Richton on March 8 in a game where the Richton Rebels led 4-1 after the first inning. Brister saw his team score 14 runs in the third as Enterprise had a 14-hit game.

Prewitt “Big Rig” Falvey led the way with a home run and a five RBI day at the plate. Kelly Burgess, Cooper Jordan and Raiford all had a double each for EAC. Burgess had two RBIs as did sophomore Lane Brister. Jordan pitched the win for the Yellow Jackets.

The two wins over East Marion were region victories for Enterprise. The Jackets then get back into region play again on March 18 with a matchup against Sacred Heart Catholic (9-5).

 

Loyd Star

Loyd Star and head coach Jared Britt played just once over the holiday break, an 8-5 loss to MHSAA 5A North Pike. The Hornets had beaten Wesson 11-8 in their last game on March 7.

Eli Thornton drew the start on the mound for Loyd Star and had the lone RBI of the game for the Hornets. Junior Jacob Smith also had a double for LS in the loss.

In the win over Wesson, Loyd Star got two doubles from Jordyn Kees and a double apiece from Carson Cunningham and Paxton Zumbro in the win.

Smith picked up the pitching victory as Kees and Casen Easterling had two RBIs each.

Loyd Star will look to bounce back when they play at St. Joseph in Madison on Monday.

 

Wesson

Wesson and coach Vance Windom are 6-6 overall after a 1-1 week with a 14-1 win over Salem and a 6-4 loss to Brookhaven High.

Parker Brooks had a three RBI day with two hits, one being a double, in the win over Salem. Cooper Neely also slugged a double in that win and the Cobras got a triple from BP Robbins in the Salem win. Robbins led the way with four RBIs against Salem.

Tripp Martin pitched the win for Wesson.

Brooks, Wyatt Garrett, and Aiden Wallace all had an RBI for Wesson in the loss to Brookhaven High.

Wesson will get into region play on Tuesday with a double header against Jefferson County.
