Basketball season ends at MAIS 5A State Tournament for Brookhaven Academy

The 2024-2025 basketball season ended for both Brookhaven Academy teams on Tuesday at the MAIS 5A State Tournament hosted by Pillow Academy in Greenwood.

Coach Drake Flowers and the BAD girls’ team lost 76-59 in their opening round matchup against Leake Academy. Leake, the No. 2 seed out of the 5A North, moved on to face Parklane Academy in the semifinals on Friday afternoon.

Leake moved to 32-3 on the season with the win, as the only losses this season for the Rebelettes have come to East Rankin Academy (34-2), the team that beat them 47-44 last week in the 5A North State Tournament championship game. East Rankin matched up with host Pillow in the other semifinal.

It was the second meeting of the season between Leake and BA, as the Cougars fell 60-32 back on Nov. 25 in a tournament matchup.

Brookhaven Academy will lose two seniors to graduation in point guard Ella Smith and forward Ainsley Orr.

Smith scored 17 points and grabbed four rebounds in her final game. Orr, who recently committed to play soccer at East Mississippi CC, finished with nine points and two rebounds.

Sophomore guard Anne Rylea Thurman led the way for BA with 19 points, including a 5-of-6 shooting performance from behind the 3-point line.

Sophomore Bailey Douglas added nine points, Mary Anson Tate scored three points and Susanna Tate had two points to round out the scoring for Brookhaven.

Flower’s first team at his alma mater finishes with a 20-14 record.

The Brookhaven Academy boys’ team and coach Josh Watts faced the top seed from the 5A North in Heritage Academy out of Columbus. The Heritage Patriots moved to 22-5 on the season with a 58-32 win over the Cougars.

Watts has one senior on his roster in wing Carter Davis. Davis led the way with 16 points in the loss on Tuesday. The 6-foot-4 Davis also pulled down a team best seven rebounds against Herit-age.

Freshman point guard Carter “Bubba” Coleman scored six points and handed out four assists. Jun-ior center Madden Coleman scored five points, junior forward Carson Mowdy had four points, and sophomore Ridge Hamil rounded out the BA scoring with one point.

Heritage moves on to face Rossville Christian (Tn.), a team that it split with in the regular season, in the semifinals. Oak Forest Academy (La.) (31-2) plays Simpson Academy (23-2) in the other semifinal game on Friday.

The consolation and championships of the tournament will be played on Saturday in Greenwood.

The Brookhaven Academy boys finish the 2024-2025 season with a 17-13 overall record.
