Mississippi Valley State football hires Terrell Buckley

Terrell Buckley, a native of Pascagoula who is a College Football Hall of Famer, a Super Bowl Champion and a longtime assistant coach in the SEC, was picked this week to be the next head football coach at Mississippi Valley State University.

Buckley has coached at both Mississippi State and Ole Miss in his career, where he helped mold the defensive backs and gained a reputation as a top level recruiter. Buckley won the Jim Thorpe Award as the top defensive back in the country during his playing career at Florida State University. He was a top five NFL draft pick in 1992 and helped the 2001 New England Patriots capture the first Super Bowl in franchise history.

Most recently, Buckley coached the Orlando Guardians of the XFL in 2023.

Buckley replaces Kendrick Wade, who led his alma mater for the past two seasons to a combined 2-22 record.

The Delta Devils have not finished above .500 since 2006, when legendary MVSU quarterback Willie Totten was coaching the team. Totten led MVSU to back-to-back 6-5 finishes in 2005-2006.

Valley has not beaten their SWAC rivals from Jackson State since 1994 and last beat Alcorn State in 2006.
