Cookie bakes up 44-point game as CLCC hoops takes two from SUS

One of the guards from Southern University-Shreveport was jawing with Copiah-Lincoln Community College guard Angel “Cookie” Wilkinson in the first half of the matchup between the schools Saturday in Wesson.
After hitting a 3-pointer, Wilkinson, an alum of Brookhaven High, barked that her opponent needed to “check my stats.”
If the SUS player was to look at the final stat sheet from the 92-78 win by Co-Lin after the game went final, she’d have seen a career best 44-point effort from Wilkinson.
The game was tied 39-39 at halftime, with Shreveport holding a lead for much of the first half, one that was double digits at one point.
The third quarter was where Co-Lin and head coach Dr. Britta Stephens pulled away, outscoring SUS 22-12 in the 10 minutes after halftime.
Wilkinson, the only sophomore to see the court for Co-Lin on Saturday, went 14-of-22 from the floor including a 5-of-8 showing from the 3-point line. Most impressively, she went 11-of-11 from the free throw line.
The CLCC women played second on Saturday, as the opener was between the men’s teams from each school. Co-Lin took that game too, winning 98-86.
The women’s pairing was the second time for the Jaguars from Shreveport to square off with Copia-Lincoln. The two teams played in Summit on Nov. 19 at the Coca Cola Classic hosted by Southwest Mississippi CC.
In that first matchup, Co-Lin came back from a three point deficit at halftime to win 62-57.
Kamaiyah Pruitt, a freshman from Pass Christian, joined Wilkinson in double digits with 19 points. Freshman forward Tyra Johnson (Morton High) came off the bench to score 10 points for CLCC.
The win was the sixth straight for the Co-Lin women, who are now 8-3 overall.
Stephen’s team will have a three-game week coming up, with a trip to play at Baton Rouge CC on Monday, a home game against Hinds CC on Thursday beginning at 5:30 p.m., and a game at LSU-Eunice on Saturday to wrap up the pre-Christmas portion of the schedule.
Wilkinson is now second in the nation with a 23.5 points per game average. She is shooting over 40 percent from the 3-point line while also adding 5.5 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game.
Once already this season Wilkinson was named MACCC Player of the Week and one can expect another award to soon come her way. Prior to the win over SUS, Wilkinson scored 32 points at South Arkansas CC in the game before Thanksgiving and then came back after the break to score 33 earlier in the week in a win at Delgado.
Conference play will begin for Co-Lin in January, with a trip on the 13th to face Northwest Mississippi CC in Senatobia. That same week Co-Lin will host Southwest CC in Wesson on Jan. 16.
Stephens, who was a longtime assistant at Southwest before taking the head job at Co-Lin, had her inaugural squad finish 13-13 last season.
The Co-Lin men are 7-4 after their high scoring win over the Jaguars.
Playing on their home court for the first time in three weeks, the Co-Lin men came out the gate scorching hot, leading 20-2 to start the game.
The Wolves led 57-51 at half as both teams were applying full-court or three-quarter court pressure, creating a pace that was mostly quick and sometimes panicked, which helped the Jaguars stick around despite them only playing eight guys.
SUS pulled to within 82-77 with five minutes remaining, but Co-Lin got five straight points from freshman Prince Ojukwu and a 3-pointer by Dakotah Hillard to bump the advantage back out to 90-79 in a 60 second burst.
Ojukwu hit a game-winning 3-pointer for the Wolves with less than three seconds left on Wednesday at Delgado in a 49-46 victory.
Fourth year CLCC head coach David Sanders started the 6-foot-4 Ojukwu, a native of Ontario, Canada, on one of the wings Saturday against SUS. On the other wing, the Wolves start 6-foot-2 freshman Deven Bates.
A native of Jackson, Bates is leading the Wolves with a 24.6 point per game average. On Saturday, Bates topped his average with a 26-point effort.
Bates went 3-of-7 from the 3-point line on Saturday, but where he does his best work is in the midrange game, as he hit shot after shot by creating space with a hard drive and then pulling up around the free-throw line with a smooth jumper.
Like Wilkinson on the women’s side, Bates has won player of the week once for the conference as he is currently the sixth leading scorer in the country.
Hillard, a 6-foot-7 sophomore from Hazlehurst, scored 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting while pulling down five rebounds. Ojukwu scored 15 points.
All 14 members of the Co-Lin roster who dressed out played, as the Wolves are still working through who’ll be getting the most minutes in the rotation once league play begins.
Freshman point guard Keisean Shields, an out-of-state player from Oklahoma, came off the bench to score 15 points for Co-Lin on Saturday after chipping in 10 in a similar role at Delgado earlier in the week.
All four losses this season for Sander’s team have come in Florida based tournaments.
Winners of six games in a row, the Co-Lin men have one more game prior to breaking for Christmas, when they’ll face Hinds on Thursday in Mullen Gymnasium in a matchup to be played after the women’s game between the schools.
