The Copiah-Lincoln Wolves never led on Thursday, losing 21-12 at Jones College in Ellisville to drop their record to 2-2 on the season.

The MACCC South Division standings now have Mississippi Gulf Coast (4-0) at the top of the table along with Pearl River (3-1) as both teams have started league play with a 2-0 record. They’ll meet next week at MGCCC.

Jones moves to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in division play with the win over Co-Lin. The Bobcats lost 27-20 to Gulf Coast last week.

Co-Lin and head coach Glenn Davis are 1-1 in the division and 2-2 overall. Up next is 2024 Homecoming in Wesson, which culminates on Thursday with a 6:30 p.m. kickoff against Southwest Mississippi CC.

The Bears are 0-4 after a 55-36 loss to Gulf Coast on Thursday. One thing Southwest has shown this season is an ability to put points on the board, as the team is currently averaging 30 points per game.

Co-Lin held off a Southwest rally last season and won 29-21 in Wesson. The Wolves hold a nine-game winning streak over the Bears, dating back to the 2014 season.

Unfortunately for Co-Lin, they have now lost seven games in a row to Jones following the loss on Thursday.

There is still much to play for in Wesson though, as Co-Lin made the MACCC state finals last season despite losing to Jones during the regular season.

In other MACCC action played on Thursday, Itawamba (3-1, 0-1) knocked off East Mississippi 36-34. The Lions of EMCC are now 1-3 overall and 0-2 in the North Division. Mississippi Delta (1-2, 1-0) got its first win of the season with a 23-7 victory in Moorhead that keeps Hinds (0-4, 0-1) winless on the year. Northwest Mississippi (3-1, 2-2) won for a third straight game with a 35-16 win over Coahoma (0-4, 0-2) in Clarksdale. Holmes CC (4-0, 2-0) stayed unbeaten with a 41-7 win over Northeast Mississippi (1-2, 0-1). Pearl River (3-1, 2-0) got a game winning field goal at the horn to win 23-20 at East Central (2-2, 0-1).

In Ellisville on Thursday, Co-Lin outgained Jones College 303-196 in total yards. The Wolves rushed for 99 yards and held Jones to 39 yards on the ground. Neither team was great in converting third downs, as CLCC went 5-of-17 and JC went 5-of-15. Co-Lin also led in time of possession by a seven-minute margin.

Jones went up 7-0 early in the first quarter and Co-Lin cut the advantage to 7-6 via a Que Tillman (West Point) 3-yard touchdown run with 13:01 left until halftime.

The Bobcats responded with a 53-yard touchdown pass that made the score 14-6 at the half. Two second half field goals by Humberto Rosales of CLCC pulled Co-Lin to within 14-12 late in the game, but the home team got an insurance touchdown late to ice the win.

Like in a similarly frustrating loss on the road earlier this season at Holmes, the Wolves were undone by three costly turnovers.

Sophomore quarterback Will Loy (Wesson) went 20-of-36 passing for 165 yards. Sophomore running back Tray Minor (Natchez High) picked up 101 yards on 12 carries to lead the Co-Lin ground game. Doug Nelson (Hazlehurst High) led the Co-Lin defense with seven totals in the win.

A pre-game ceremony will be held in Wesson on Thursday prior to the game against SMCC to honor the 2024 class of Co-Lin Sports Hall of Fame inductees. Inductees this year include Calvin Butler (football), Kiara Etienne (basketball), Andrew McGee (football), Xavier Qualls (baseball), Marianna Reeves (softball) and Johnny Steptoe (basketball).
