Mississippi College holds an annual event known as The Opener, where the school’s cross-country program hosts a college meet on Friday and a high school meet the next day.

The race for secondary students on Saturday at Choctaw Trails in west Jackson was the biggest yet in the history of the event. Several area schools had runners competing in either a 5K Red Division race, a 4K White Division race or a 3K Blue Division race.

The top local finisher was Brookhaven High sophomore Isabella Iles, who finished 11th overall in the high school girls’ 5K with a time of 21 minutes and two seconds. That race had 338 competitors in it alone.

The girls’ 5K winner was junior Lilly Overby of Simpson Academy with a time of 18:41. Overby is an elite runner, as her time was faster than the winner of the collegiate women’s race on Friday, which was won by an MC athlete in 19:07.

There were 37 different schools in the field of the girls’ competition and Brookhaven High, which has first place finishes this season at two previous races, finished seventh overall. The top team finisher was East Rankin Academy, followed by Madison-Ridgeland Academy, and Columbia Academy.

The boys’ 5K was won by sophomore Brennan Robin of Parkway High in Bossier City, Louisiana. There were 446 competitors in the boys’ 5K event and the top local finisher for it was Loyd Star senior Gauge Montgomery in 36th place with a time of 17:51.

Parkway won the team event in the boys’ 5K and was followed by Pearl High and Madison Central in the standings.

In the 3K junior high girls’ race, West Lincoln eighth grader Rainee Martin finished seventh overall in a field of 209 runners.
