The Brookhaven Academy softball team and head coach Lisa Covington probably felt like they deserved an easy win after being involved in some tight games of late.
On Tuesday at home, the Cougars cruised to a 13-3 over their district foes from Silliman Institute in a five-inning game. BA outhit SI 11-2 as starting pitcher Ann Elise Duncan was dealing in the circle for the Cougars.
Duncan gave up just two hits, walked three batters and struck out 11 Silliman Wildcats.
Junior slugger Morgan Chemin continued to have a scorching hot bat at the plate as she slugged two home runs, including a grand slam. Chemin finished 3-of-3 at the plate with six RBIs.
Chemin wasn’t the only member of the lineup to hit a round-tripper for BA, as Duncan and Madelynn Lambert also hit home runs for the Cougars.
Duncan had two RBIs while Lambert, Bailey Parks, Kensy Covington, and Miriam Wallace drove in one run apiece.
The Cougars are now 6-0 in MAIS District 3-5A as they’ve won some thrillers to get to this point.
On Aug. 22 at home against Oak Forest Academy, BA was down 6-4 to start the bottom of the seventh inning. They pulled to within 6-5 when Covington singled in one run.
Chemin then came to bat and blasted the second pitch she saw over the centerfield fence for a three-run home run and a thrilling 8-6 victory for BA. The Cougars will return the game in Amite, Louisiana to take on OFA again next week.
Covington and her Cougars then went to Parklane Academy on Aug. 26 to face the Pioneers, their biggest rivals, in another district game. Parklane beat BA two games to one in the MAIS 5A championship series last year.
Duncan was light-out in the circle, giving up just one hit and striking out 14 batters in a game that went to eight innings. A Swayze Poole double ended up scoring the two go-ahead runs for BA in the top of the eighth.
Brookhaven Academy will host the highly anticipated rematch with Parklane on Sept. 17.
A day after beating Parklane in their first meeting, the Cougars took on Columbia Academy at home in another game that went to an extra inning.
The Cougars wearing blue jumped out to a 7-1 lead over the visiting Cougars in orange, but CA chipped away at the lead and eventually led 10-9 with BA batting in the bottom of the eighth.
Duncan ended the game with a double that scored two runs and delivered a 11-10 victory for her team. The game was also another two homerun, six RBI-day at the plate for Chemin.
Brookhaven Academy will also host its annual tournament on Saturday, Sept. 7 and play Bowling Green School at home in another district matchup on Sept. 9
On Thursday, Sept. 5, Brookhaven Academy looks to try and avenge its only two losses of the season, both to Cathedral School, with a matchup in Natchez against the Green Wave.
