The Brookhaven Academy girls are the No. 1 seed coming out of MAIS District 3-5A after beating Bowling Green School on Friday to clinch the district title.

Coach Ron Kessler and his Cougars are 28-9 on the season and will face the No. 4 team from District 4, ACCS, in the first round of the MAIS 5A South State Tournament on Tuesday in Amite, Louisiana at Oak Forest Academy.

A win in that opening round game would qualify BA for the state tournament next week at Copiah Academy and send BA to a semifinal matchup on Friday with the winner of Cathedral School and Bowling Green.

 

 

MHSAA Region 7-2A at Bogue Chitto

Monday

The Loyd Star girls (9-10) and West Lincoln boys (8-14) both will hope to keep their season alive on Monday when they face Wilkinson County in a pair of elimination games to tip off the Region 7-2A Tournament hosted by Bogue Chitto.

The homestanding Bobcats will be the favorites on both sides of the brackets as the Bogue Chitto girls (24-0) and Bogue Chitto boys (23-1) are both top seeds and both coached by Marc Howard.

Coach Russell Cruise and the Loyd Star girls are 2-0 this season against Wilkinson County. They beat the Wildcats 59-19 in the first meeting and then topped WC 45-30 on Friday to finish the regular season.

Coach Jay Case and the West Lincoln boys’ team split their two meetings with Wilkinson County. West Lincoln won 54-27 in the first meeting, but the Wildcats got payback in Woodville with a 60-49 victory over the Bears.

On Tuesday, West Lincoln (16-6) will take on Amite County in the first semifinal of the girls’ bracket. The two teams played on Friday, a game won 44-4 by West Lincoln. The first meeting of the season between the teams was not so ugly, as the Bears won that one 38-31 in Liberty.

West Lincoln has won the last six Region 7-2A tournaments on the girls’ side. Coach Lane Young and his team played undefeated Bogue Chitto closer than any other school in the region, losing 44-38 at BC on Jan. 23.

The first boys’ semifinal on Tuesday will feature a pair of teams that have played two tight games this season in Amite County and Loyd Star. The Hornets and coach Seth Britt won both those games, 62-58 and 59-56.
The only division losses of the season for the Hornets (16-5) both came to top-seeded Bogue Chitto.

 

 

MHSAA Region 3-5A at Florence

Tuesday

Both Brookhaven High teams are the No. 2 seeds in the Region 3-5A Tournament this week at Florence High and that puts both of them into the semifinals on Tuesday.

The Brookhaven High girls’ team (12-13) finished with a 7-3 record in the division. Florence High is the top seed in the tournament after going 10-0 in the division. The Eagles (21-7) beat BHS 46-38 on Friday in the regular season finale.

The semifinal opponent for coach Preston Wilson and his team will either be Natchez or Provine. The Panthers split with Natchez during the regular season, winning 57-42 at home to secure second place after losing 42-38 earlier in the season at NHS. BHS swept Provine in the regular season, as did Natchez.
Top seeded Florence will meet either North Pike or South Jones in the other semifinal of the girls’ bracket while top seeded Provine takes on either Florence High or Natchez High in the other boy’s semifinal on Tuesday.

It’s a similar situation with the BHS boys’ team and coach Charlton Grey. The Panthers are 20-5 overall and went 7-3 in the division, behind a Provine team that topped the league with an 8-2 mark.

Provine swept the Panthers during the regular season and BHS closed the year out on Friday with a 69-59 win over Florence at home.
Grey’s squad will face either North Pike or South Jones in the semifinals on Tuesday. BHS split with the South Jones Braves in the regular season, winning 64-63 at home and losing 57-48 in Ellisville.

 

 

MHSAA Region 8-1A at East Marion

Tuesday

7 p.m. – Enterprise vs. East Marion (Girls)

The Enterprise girls’ team is already in the region tournament semifinals and will face host East Marion after finishing as the No. 2 seed during the regular season. Coach Rusty Newman and his team are 7-12 and finished 5-3 in league play.

The EAC girls split with East Marion. They beat the Eagles 71-36 at home and then lost 48-45 at East Marion on Jan. 29.

Lumberton is the top seed and plays either Sacred Heart or Salem in the other semifinal.

Newman also coaches the Enterprise boys’ team, who is the No. 3 seed in their bracket after finishing 10-11 overall and 5-5 in the region.

Enterprise had little trouble with Salem in the regular season, beating the Wildcats 60-34 and 60-35. A win moves EAC on to the semifinals against Sacred Heart, a team they split games with during the season. The Jackets beat Sacred Heart 54-50 at home and lost 52-27 in Hattiesburg on Jan. 23.

East Marion is the top seed in the boy’s bracket and will play either Resurrection Catholic or Lumberton in the other semifinal matchup.

 

 

MHSAA Region 7-4A at Lawrence County

Tuesday

Both Lawrence County teams finished in second place in Region 7-4A and both will face Forrest County AHS in semifinal matchups on Tuesday in Monticello.

Coach Candace McDuffey and the LC girls are 14-10 overall and went 6-2 in the division, which was won by Columbia High. The difference in first and second place for LC was just two points, as Columbia beat them 37-36 and 51-50.

McDuffey’s team had little trouble with FCAHS in the regular season, winning 64-30 and 54-23.

Columbia High will play either Sumrall or Purvis in the other semifinal girls’ game on Tuesday.

LC boys’ coach Pat Bridges and his team are 12-14 finished second behind Sumrall (21-3) in the division. Both of those matchups were close though, as the Bobcats from Sumrall beat Bridge’s squad 59-53 and 56-53. Sumrall awaits either Purvis or Columbia in the other semifinal on Tuesday.

 

 

Region 7-3A at Port Gibson

The Wesson boys’ team and coach Trace Abdul-Hadi will face elimination on Tuesday when they tangle with Franklin County in an opening round region game at Port Gibson. The host Blue Wave are the top seed in the bracket and await the winner of the matchups between the Cobras (3-19) and the Bulldogs (12-11).
Franklin County beat Wesson 74-41 and 70-38 during the regular season.

The Wesson girls’ squad and coach Michelle Nunnery are already in the semifinals as the No. 3 seed. They’ll face second seeded South Pike (17-5) on Thursday and will play again on Friday in either the consolation game or championship.

South Pike swept the regular season meetings, winning 42-37 at Wesson and 60-30 when the teams met in Magnolia. The Wesson girls are 11-11 overall.
