The Belhaven University softball team is in the midst of a dominating season that continues this weekend with an NCAA Division III Super Regional matchup against Texas Lutheran University in a best of three series that’ll be played in Seguin, Texas.

Former Brookhaven High and Copiah-Lincoln standout Macy Ziskin is big part of that success for Belhaven as the junior starts at shortstop for the Blazers.

Ziskin was recently named honorable mention All-American Southwest Conference after the completion of the regular season. During the regular season she hit .298 in 43 starts and scored 25 runs for Belhaven. Ziskin hit four doubles, a triple and a home run, while also leading the team with 25 walks. She also led the team with 15 stolen bases in 17 attempts and struck out just six times in 2022.

A native of Meadville, Ziskin is a 2017 graduate of Brookhaven High where she starred for coach Mandy Vinson. She then played at East Central CC in Decatur in 2018 before joining Co-Lin for the COVID-19 shortened 2020 season.

Belhaven is 41-6 overall and will play Texas Lutheran (41-4) in a series that spans from Friday-Sunday with the winner gaining a bid to the Division III championship later this month in Salem, Virginia.

Two sophomores on the 2022 Co-Lin softball team, Josie Meggs (Kosciusko High) and Malori Cade (Loyd Star), are committed to play at Belhaven next season.

The Blazers won the ASC regular season for a second straight year this season and then took the tournament championship earlier this month in a tourney that was played in Cleveland, Mississippi.

The tourney title was the first ASC tournament championship in school history as Belhaven joined the conference in 2015, after making the transition from an NAIA member school to NCAA Division III.

It’ll also be the last ASC title in school history as Belhaven is making a change in conference membership ahead of next school year.

Belhaven joined the ASC on the heels of Mississippi College leaving the conference and moving to Division II status. All of the schools in the league, save Belhaven and University of the Ozarks in Arkansas, are located in Texas.

Next year the Blazers will play in USA South Athletic Conference in football only, in a west division that has schools in Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Alabama and Tennessee.

In all other sports, such as softball, Belhaven will play in the newly formed Collegiate Conference of the South with schools from Georgia, Kentucky, Alabama and Tennessee.

Belhaven and head coach Kevin Griffin traveled to Marshall, Texas last week for a NCAA Regional and went 3-0 with wins over Fontbonne University (8-2), East Texas Baptist University (4-3) and Linfield University (5-3) to earn a spot in the Super Regional.
