Soccer roundup: Loyd Star sweeps BC, BHS takes 2 vs. Forest Hill

Here’s a look at how area soccer teams fared this week.
Loyd Star, Bogue Chitto
The Loyd Star girls’ soccer team moved to 7-1 on the season Tuesday with an 8-0 win over Bogue Chitto.
LS got four goals from junior Mary Claire McCurley and two goals from sophomore Abby Burnette in the win. Senior Brooke Cade added one goal and two assists for coach Jordan Lea while senior Macy East added a goal and an assist.
“I was curious to see how we’d play after the Thanksgiving break, but we didn’t seem to show any signs of rust,” said Lea. “The girls competed from start to finish, were able to dictate the game and never stopped pressuring Bogue Chitto.”
The lone loss of the season for LS was a 4-1 defeat to Terry High. The win over Bogue Chitto was the first region win of the season for the Lady Hornets.
They’ll dip back into region play on Dec. 9 when they host West Lincoln. The following week has two huge division matchups as Loyd Star travels to Franklin County (5-4-1) on Dec. 14 and then hosts Wesson (6-1) on Dec. 16.
McCurley — the reigning Daily Leader All-Area Player of the Year — became the all-time leading scorer in program history against Bogue Chitto. Now at 74 goals in her career, McCurley passed Madisyn Brister’s previous record of 72 goals.
The Lady Bobcats (0-7) and coach Shane Nippe will next host West Lincoln on Dec. 6, North Pike on Dec. 7 and Hazlehurst on Dec. 9. Loyd Star and Bogue Chitto are scheduled to meet again at Loyd Star on Jan. 4.
The Hornets also took the boys’ match by a 4-1 final. Cooper Creel scored two goals for the Hornets while Mason Smith and Brantley Walker had one goal apiece.
Peyton Warren and Cooper Reid had an assist each for the Hornets who are now 4-4 on the year.
Brookhaven High
The Brookhaven High Panthers swept a pair of matches Tuesday over Forest Hill. The BHS boys moved to 5-3-1 on the season with a 4-0 win over the Patriots.
Junior Cole Cruthirds secured a hat-trick for BHS with three goals in the win. Senior Addison Brady scored the other goal for coach Aaron Ayers.
Ethan Lopez had a pair of assists for Ole Brook while Christian Peyton and Michael Stewart added one assist each.
Sophomore goalkeeper Bryce Smith faced four shots-on-goal and made one save in earning the shutout win for Brookhaven.
BHS will play at Franklin County on Dec. 7 before opening region play at home on Dec. 10 against Florence. They’ll play at Natchez in another division match on Dec. 14 and at Florence on Dec. 16 in the last match before the holiday break.
The Brookhaven High girls went to 6-3-1 Tuesday with a 7-1 win over Forest Hill.
Senior Leyton Roberson scored four goals in the win while junior Maryanna Boyte added a pair of goals. Freshman Caroline Kilpatrick rounded out the BHS scoring with one goal.
Kilpatrick had one assist as did senior Gracie Alford. Junior Maelee Thibodeux earned the win in goal for Brookhaven High coach Dustin Bairfield.
Brookhaven Academy
The Cougars and coach Alex Brown moved to 4-0 on the season Tuesday with a 5-0 win over East Rankin Academy.
Senior Yosvin Hernandez scored two goals for BA and freshman Yojan Hernandez also scored a pair of goals. Senior Corey Case scored one goal and had one assist. Yosvin Hernandez had one assist as did senior Sam Smith. Senior Logan Alexander added two assists for the Cougars.
Sophomore Jaden Lea and junior William Phillips split time in goal for BA and shared the clean sheet with Lea stopping the only shot on goal by ERA.
Brookhaven Academy will host Laurel Christian for a home match Monday at 5:30 p.m. The next night the Cougars hit the road to visit Lawrence County High School for another 5:30 p.m. start. The final match of the 2021 portion of the schedule for BA comes on Dec. 16 at Manchester Academy.
