Alabama State runs away from Jackson State

JACKSON (AP) – DeMarcus Robinson scored 14 points and Alabama State held Jackson State to just 20 points in the second half en route to a 62-42 victory in the regular season finale Saturday.

Alabama State finished its season with an 18-9 record overall, 14-5 in the Southwestern Conference, but the Hornets are banned from postseason play due to failing to meet the NCAA’s Academic Progress Requirement standards.

Alabama State took a two-point lead into halftime, 24-22, but blew the game open in the second half by outscoring Jackson State 38-20.

The Hornets shot 51.1 percent from the field (23 of 45), including 8 of 18 from beyond the arc. Jamal Walters and Brandon Graham each scored 12 points and Maurice Strong pulled down 11 rebounds.

Jackson State (’11-20) finishes tied with Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 9-9. Both advance to the SWAC tournament, which opens Tuesday, March 10.
