LCHS Lady Cougars collect three wins

The Lawrence County Lady Cougars captured three wins in Loyd Star Invitational softball tournament action between Friday and Saturday.

The Lady Cougars defeated the Bogue Chitto Lady Cats 6-3 Friday afternoon in game one. Lawrence County returned to Loyd Star Saturday to play two game beating Natchez Cathedral 7-2 and Brookhaven 5-2

Lawrence County (16-5, 3-3) is scheduled to be in action Monday as they host the Enterprise Lady Yellow Jackets. Junior varsity action begins at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity game at 6:15 p.m.

Lawrence Co. 6, Bogue Chitto 3 

The Lady Cougars and the Cats battled in a scoreless contest in the first two innings, until the top of the third inning when Lawrence managed to plate one run to take a 1-0 lead.

In the fourth inning, the Lady Cougars managed to add to their lead with a four-run surge to lead 5-0. In the bottom of the third inning, BC rallied back and scored three runs to trimmed down LCHS lead to 5-3.

Lawrence County scored one more run in the top of the third to extend their lead to 6-3 and held on for the win.

Elizabeth Smith was the winning pitcher, with seven strikeouts and three walks. Jordan Harp (0K, 0BB) came in as a relief pitcher and pitched one inning.

Christian Black suffered the setback on the rubber for the Lady Cats with three strikeouts and two walks. Codi Leggett (0K, 0BB) also pitched in relief.

Colby Kirkland was the top hitter at the plate for Bogue Chitto with a double and a single and Mallory Allen provided two singles. Zariah Matthews, Terrah Nelson, Codi Leggett, Alana Nettles and Daley Roberts hit safely.

Elizabeth Smith paced the Lady Cougars offense with three singles. Callie Fortenberry contributed two singles. Alexsundria Thomas ripped a double. Hitting safely were Madison Hyde and Josey Nations.

Lawrence Co. 7, Cathedral 2 

Lawrence County’s Elizabeth Smith was the winning pitcher in Saturday’s contest against Cathedral with one strikeout and two walks.

Alexsundria Thomas directed the Lady Cougars offense with a triple and two singles. Madison Hyde provided two singles. Callie Fortenberry hit a triple and Jamie Martin had a double. Hitting safely was Elizabeth Smith.

Lawrence Co. 5, Brookhaven 2 

Lawrence County’s Jordan Harp tossed the win, collecting six strikeouts and five walks.

Katherine Shell suffered the setback for the Lady Panthers with one strikeout and one walks.

Maddux Kirkland, Callie Fortenberry, Alexsundria Thomas, Madison Hyde, Lexie Johnson, Josey Nations and Elizabeth Smith paced the Lady Cougars at the plate with a single apiece.

Shell was the top hitter for the Lady Panthers offense with a double. Tia Bussey, Julianna Porter and Kat Wallace provided a single each.
