Loyd Star splits with Prentiss
PRENTISS – The Loyd Star Lady Hornets clobbered the Prentiss Lady Bulldogs 66-32 in Region 7-2A action at Archie Fike Gymnasium Friday.
In the boys’ contest, the Prentiss Bulldogs rallied back in the fourth quarter to beat Loyd Star 62-52.
Loyd Star will continue district action Tuesday night as it hosts Amite County for Senior Night. Action begins at 6 p.m. for the girls’ game, followed by the boys at 7:30.
Lady Hornets 66, Lady Bulldogs 32
The Lady Hornets (18-1, 9-0) dominated the Lady Bulldogs to claim a 24-5 advantage after one quarter and cruised to a 39-14 lead at halftime.
Loyd Star outscored Prentiss 27-18 in the final two frames to clinch the win.
“The girls played a really good ball game,” said Loyd Star coach Gene “Moochie” Britt. “Our defensive pressure was the difference of the game as we forced a lot of turnovers, which helped us score several easy baskets. Overall, I was very pleased with our team effort.”
Mackenzie Smith powered the Lady Hornets with 20 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Jordan Shelby chipped in 16 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Caylee Yarborough netted eight points, three rebounds and two steals. Hannah Dickerson provided six points, five rebounds and four steals. Lydia Britt had six points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals. Faith Berguron scored five points and had five steals. Caitlyn Beard added three points. Marley Poole and Carley Case finished with one point each.
Jada Brinson directed the Lady Bulldogs with nine points. Jakeria Madison provided eight points. Jasmine Dothard scored five points and Jermia Easterling had four points. Diamond Herrion netted three points. Mykayla Young added two points and Cyiana Wynn had one point.
Prentiss 62, Loyd Star 52
Loyd Star carried a 25-22 lead into halftime, but Prentiss went on a 15-13 run to close out the third period.
In the final period, Prentiss outscored Loyd Star 23-14 for the win.
“The guys played really well for three quarters, but in the fourth quarter costly turnovers and missed baskets hurt us,” said Britt. “We need to play all four quarters if we expect to win games.”
Javion Beard was the top scorer for Loyd Star (10-9, 5-4) with 20 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Greg Hooks contributed 15 points and four rebounds. Cade Hodges scored nine points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals. Levi Redd had six points, eight rebounds and three steals. Avery Leggett finished with two points and five rebounds.
Prentiss had three players to score in double figures as Tim McNair Jr. and Kedarious Sumrall pumped in 18 points apiece. Kendrick Graves chipped in 10 points. Kevin Hall added nine points. John Smith scored six points. Tykevious Daniels had three points.
