Lincoln County residents have rallied together to show support for the family of a local football player fighting for his life.

Senior Loyd Star defensive linebacker/offensive running back Peyton Flowers suffered a serious head injury during the school’s homecoming game. Now, the community is working to raise money to help the Flowers family with medical expenses.

Loyd Star Principal Robin Case said so many people were trying to drop off donations for the family at the school. Legally they are not able to collect money, so a group of supporters worked with Trustmark to establish a bank account as a way to help the family through the difficult time.

Trustmark Executive Vice President Stan Foster said the bank was approached by a group of concerned citizens and was more than happy to help the community come together to support the family. He said donations could be made to the Peyton Flowers Benefit Fund at any Trustmark in the state.

To help raise money, parents and volunteers have also created a t-shirt with the superman logo on the front and Peyton and 42 on the back. All profits from the sale are going directly to the Trustmark account, with Brookhaven Graphics donating the shirts at cost.

The Loyd Star Superman shirt is based on a video that shows Flowers jumping over another football player to sack a quarterback. Flowers was so excited about the sack video he showed it to his science teacher who said he looked like Superman flying across the field.

The t-shirts are $15 with an additional $7 per shirt if they are being shipped. Forms and payment should be turned in at the Loyd Star School High School office or mailed to Loyd Star School, 1880 Highway 550, Brookhaven, MS 39601 – Attn. Peyton Flowers Fun. Sizes are from adult small to 4XL. Orders for the shirts are due Nov. 21. Checks may be payable to Peyton Flowers Fund. For more information about ordering call the school office at 601-833-3473.

A Prayers For Peyton Flowers Facebook page has also been created as a way for people to show their support for the family. The group has over 13,500 likes. Schools and communities across the state have posted showing their support of the young man. They are also using #prayersforpeyton on Twitter and Facebook.

David Flowers, Peyton’s father, posted on Facebook Sunday, “Thank you for all your love and support for Peyton and our family. Please continue to lift Peyton and all our family up in prayer as he continues this fight. Everyone that knows Peyton knows he’s a fighter. Quitting is never an option.”

Lincoln County has shown it’s support by wearing Loyd Star colors and the number 42 and holding prayer rally’s across school campuses, at sporting events and in churches.

Flowers is currently at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson in the Neurosurgical Intensive Care Center. He is currently in a medically induced comma.

Case was with the family in Jackson Tuesday and said there has been no change in his condition, and they are determining what steps to take next.
