M-Braves sweep doubleheader against Generals
PEARL — The Mississippi Braves swept the Jackson Generals in a Tuesday evening doubleheader at Trustmark Park. The Braves shutout Jackson 3-0 in game one and claimed game two by a final score of 5-2. The series continues Wednesday at 7 p.m.
In game one, Mississippi (28-22) score three runs on five hits, and Jackson (21-29) managed just three hits. The Braves plated five runs on eight hits in game two while the Generals scored two runs on eight hits.
In game one of Tuesday’s doubleheader to make up a game that was rained out at Jackson in April, the Braves defeated the Generals via the long ball. Seth Loman blasted a three-run home run to right field, putting the M-Braves out front 3-0 in the first inning. Emerson Landoni walked and KD Kang was hit by a pitch to set up Loman’s fourth long ball of the season.
Victor Mateo (2-2) held the Generals to three hits and three walks, tossing six shutout innings to pick up the win in game one. Mike Nesseth (S, 1) came on in the seventh to record the final three outs. Scott DeCecco (1-3) gave up three earned runs on five hits, a homer and three walks. He struck out five in six innings pitched and took the loss.
In game two, the M-Braves took an early lead again thanks to Loman. Mallex Smith walked, Landoni singled and Kevin Ahrens walked to load the bases with no outs. Loman then delivered a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Smith and giving the M-Braves a 1-0 lead.
D.J. Peterson singled to start the Generals’ second. Gabby Guerrero and Marcus Littlewood followed with back-to-back base hits to load the bases with one out. Jordan Cowan then delivered a two-run single to right, giving Jackson a 2-1 advantage.
In the third, Smith singled and stole second. He took third on a wild pitch and came in to score on Kevin Ahrens’ infield single, tying the game at 2-2.
The M-Braves took a 5-2 lead in the fourth. Matt Lipka’s RBI-single put the M-Braves out front 3-2 before Smith walked to load the bases. Landoni then delivered a two-run single up the middle, extending the M-Braves lead to 5-2.
Jason Hursh (2-3) gave up two earned runs on eight hits and four walks. He struck out four batters in 5.2 innings pitched. Tyler Jones (S, 4) worked the final 1.1 innings to notch the save. Moises Hernandez (3-2) allowed four earned runs on five hits and three walks while fanning two in 3.1 innings of work.
In game four of this six-game series at Trustmark Park, the M-Braves send right-hander Tyrell Jenkins (4-2, 3.00) to the hill against Generals lefty Jake Zokan (1-2, 4.96). First pitch is slated for 7 p.m. Gates open at 6 p.m.
