Thomas, Watts capture gold in South State

Loyd Star’s Abby Thomas and West Lincoln’s Jason Watts competed in the 1600-meter run and the 3200-meter run and won both events in the Class 2A South State championship at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School.

Both Thomas and Watts will advance to run in the state championship in Pearl Friday, starting around 4 p.m.

Abby Thomas clinched first place in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:45.37 and posted a time of 12:10.20 in the 3200-meter run to win.

Jason Watts captured first place in the 1600-meter run with a time 4:57.60 and won the 3200-meter run with a time of 10:57.64.

Loyd Star’s Leondre Dodds finished fourth in the boys’ 1600-meter run with a 5:26.17 and will advance to the state track meet in Pearl. Dodds came in sixth place in the 3200-meter run with a time of 11:59.56.

Roberto Galindo of Loyd Star finished eighth in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:34.27 and placed eighth in the 3200-meter run with a time of 12:12.63.

Jonathan Mathis, of West Lincoln, secured a spot in the state tournament meet in Pearl after finishing fourth in the boys’ 3200-meter run with a time of 11:37.58.
