Loyd Star defeats Cathedral in junior high action

The Loyd Star Hornets and Lady Hornets kicked off their 2015-16 junior high season with a pair of victories over the Natchez Cathedral Green Wave Tuesday night.

In junior high girls’ action, the Lady Hornets defeated the Lady Green Wave 25-15.

Taylor Smith was the leading scorer for Loyd Star with 14 points. Whitney Watts and Kelsie Foster contributed four points apiece.

Emma Whittington was the top shooter for Cathedral with seven points.

In junior high boys’ action, Loyd Star edged Cathedral 37-35.

Tanner Watts directed the Hornets’ offense with 19 points. Roberto Galindo netted nine points and Peyton Morse scored five points.

Bryson Moore was the top scorer for Cathedral with 10 points

In seventh grade action, Cathedral took two games from Loyd Star. The Lady Green Wave defeated the Lady Hornets 17-6 and in the boys game Cathedral knocked off Loyd Star 21-10.

Marleigh Bullock, Marlee Rogers and Karli Martin directed the Lady Hornets with two points each.

Presley Martin scored seven points to lead the Lady Green Wave.

In the boys game, Will McCullough paced the Hornets with six points and Thomas Kelly netted four points.

Kendrell Washington powered Cathedral’s offense with six points.

Loyd Star continues junior high action Thursday as it travels to Enterprise to play three games. Seventh grade boys’ action begins at 5 p.m., followed by a pair junior high games starting at 6 and 7 p.m.
