The West Lincoln Lady Bears relied on strong defense and pitching to edge the Lawrence County Lady Cougars 2-1 Tuesday night in slowpitch softball action.

“We were really fortunate to beat a team as good as Lawrence County,” said West Lincoln coach Andrew Redd. “Our girls made some great defensive plays which kept Lawrence County from scoring some runs on us. Overall, we need to do a better job spreading the hit around.”

The Lady Bears (13-0, 1-0) will resume action Thursday as they prepare to host the Amite County Lady Trojans in a big Region 7-2A varsity doubleheader. Game time starts at 5 p.m.

The Lady Cougars (9-3, 2-0) has the rest of the week off before returning to action Tuesday to host the North Pike Lady Jaguars. Junior varsity action starts at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity contest at 6 p.m.

W. Lincoln 2, Lawrence Co. 1 

The Lawrence County Lady Cougars and the West Lincoln Lady Bears ended up showing off their strong defense and pitching in what fans thought would have been a offensive showdown.

In the opening of the first inning, Lawrence County came out strong and loaded the bases early but failed to produce runs with two outs due to the ball hitting a LCHS runner on a infield hit.

In the bottom of the first inning, West Lincoln’s managed to capitalize on Lawrence County’s mistake and secured the first lead of the contest by pushing across one run.

In the top of third inning, the LCHS Lady Cougars managed to tied the game at 1-all when Tiera Collins crushed a solo home run to left-center field.

In the bottom of the third inning, the Lady Bears battled back and reclaim their one run lead to take a 2-1 advantage.

Throughout the rest of the contest, both teams provided an exciting defensive battle for their softball fans as both offenses struggled to get things going.

MaKennah Redd tossed the win for West Lincoln with one strikeout, three walks and two intentional walks.

Barri Rogers absorbed the setback for the Lady Cougars with no strikeouts and no walks.

Alli Mullins, Anna Brooke Davis, Brianna Fauver and Peyton White paced the Lady Bears at the plate with a single each.

Collins powered the Lady Cougars’ offense with a home run and a single. Maddux Kirkland contributed two singles. Hitting safely were Callie Fortenberry, Jamie Martin, Cheyenne Long and Cierra Horton.

In JV action,  Lawrence County defeated West Lincoln 6-3.

Julianna Johnson pitched the win for LCHS with no strikeouts and two walks.

McKenzie Pyles suffered the setback for West Lincoln with no strikeouts and one walk.

Johnson paced the Lady Cougars at the plate with a double. Hitting safely were Tyranesha Davis, Raylee Ready and Addie Errington.

Skylar Hall was the top hitter on offense for the Lady Bears with two singles. Ashley Thomas ripped a double and Pyles had a single.
