MONTICELLO – Lawrence County trounced Prentiss 11-1 in high school baseball action Saturday afternoon at Jimmie Davis Park. Kody and Smith and Josh Stephens each had three hits and 4 runs batted in to power LCHS.

With the win, Josh Garrett’s Cougars improved to 8-2 on the season. Lawrence County is 2-0 in Division 7-3A play heading into a division contest with South Pike on Tuesday.

“We had a decent day,” Garrett said, “but we’ve got an awful lot of room for improvement. “We’ve got to get better in a lot of ways if we’re to compete well in our division.”

Antonio Walker led off the game with Prentiss’ lone hit. That triggered a scoring rally, as the Bulldogs grabbed a 1-0 lead. The run, off LCHS starter Brennan Lang, was unearned.

Lawrence County responded with an unearned run of its own in the bottom of the first, then added three more tallies in the second. Stephens’ two-run double was the biggest hit in that frame. The Cougars made it 5-1 in the third inning, scoring with the benefit of a base hit.

It was still 5-1 in the top of the fifth, when Prentiss loaded the bases against Cougar reliever Prentiss Anderson. With one out and the tying run at the plate, Stephens relieved Anderson and got a strikeout and ground ball to end the frame. Stephens got credited for a save. Starter Lang went three innings and earned the win.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Cougars scored six runs on five hits, the biggest blow being Kody Smith’s two-run homer. Stephens also had a two-run single.

Stephens and Smith each had three hits. Gabriel Lewis and Logan Greenlee each had two. Marcus Atterberry and Marcus Kees also had hits.

DeRonta Hartzog pitched the full game for Prentiss and gave it a good fight. He struck out six LCHS hitters.

Saturday’s scheduled junior varsity action was rained out.
