WESSON – The Panola College Ponies (6-1) took two games from the Copiah-Lincoln Wolves (0-4) baseball team Friday night on Sullivan Field. Panola staged a late rally to steal game one, 5-4, and rode that momentum into a 9-1 victory in a second game that was shortened due to rain.

Panola 5, Co-Lin 4 

Co-Lin head coach Clay Smith saw his Wolves start strong against a Panola pitcher, Preston Guillory, who has signed to play for TCU next season. The Wolves scored all four runs off of Guillory and he was chased from the mound after four innings.

The Wolves got on the board in the bottom of the second on a two RBI single by freshman second baseman Matthew Evans. Evans, a Brookhaven Academy product, scored Stevie “Choc” Hubbard and Mitch Little with a shot to right field. In the bottom of the third the Wolves posted two more runs on a single by sophomore first baseman Konner Burke. Burke hit a ball to center field that scored Adrian Brown and Hubbard.

Hubbard, a freshman from Mendenhall, led the Wolves at the plate by going 3-for-3 with three singles. Freshman pitcher Newt Brown drew the start for Co-Lin and had an impressive debut for the Wolves. Brown gave up two hits, allowed one earned run, walked four and struck out six during four innings of work.

Co-Lin head Coach Clay Smith saw plenty of things to be encouraged by from his Wolves. “We had some very good at-bats against a strong pitcher. Newt Brown did a great job and we would have loved to send him back out for another inning, but this early in the season we have to watch his pitch count,” said Smith.

The Ponies entered the top of the seventh inning trailing 4-1 and used their last turn at bat to snatch the game from the grasp of Co-Lin. The Ponies used five singles to push across four runs before the Wolves could get out of the inning.

“One thing we talk about is making all of the routine plays and we just didn’t do that late in the game,” said Smith.

Casey Hurley (0-1) took the loss after pitching 2 1/3 innings and allowing four runs. Colton Coffman recorded the win for Panola by throwing three shutout innings.

Panola 9, Co-Lin 1 

Game two was called in the bottom of the sixth when a brief, but intense rainfall made the infield at Sullivan Field unplayable.

The lone Co-Lin run would come on a RBI single by Hubbard in the bottom of the first. Freshman Alex Smith (0-2) took the loss after going 1 2/3 innings and giving up four runs.

Panola scored four runs in the second, two in the third, and three in the sixth. Austin Olivas got the win for Panola

The Wolves return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 18 when they travel to Mississippi Delta in Morehead for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
