WESSON – The Copiah-Lincoln Wolves hosted the Northwest Rangers for a non-divisional doubleheader in Wesson on Sunday. The visitors from Senatobia would win two close games, 6-4 and 5-3, over the home standing Wolves.

 Northwest 6, Co-Lin 4

The Co-Lin (9-19, 5-5) offense was hot early as they chased Northwest starter J.R. Miller after two innings on the mound. The Wolves scored one run in the bottom of the first when Logan Smith plated Adrian Brown on a sacrifice fly. Co-Lin put up two more runs in the bottom of the second when Tanner Parvin and Brown each hit a RBI single.

The Co-Lin lead would disappear in the top of the third as the Rangers exploded for five runs in the inning. Co-Lin cut the lead to 5-4 in the bottom of the fifth when Dominic Savage scored on an error by the Northwest catcher, but the Wolves would get no closer.

Colby Whitfield took the loss for Co-Lin. He pitched five innings, walked none, struck out three and allowed five runs. Tanner Densford got the win for Northwest (17-11, 5-5) in relief. He allowed one run in four innings and struck out six.

Brown led the Wolves at the plate by going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Brown also stole one base. Matthew Evans had a double for Co-Lin.

Northwest 5, Co-Lin 3

It would take eight innings to sort out game two after a clutch hit by Logan Smith tied it up in the bottom of the seventh. Smith, facing two outs and a full count, lined a single to right field that scored Colby Whitfield and tied the game at three.

Adrian Brown reached base three times for Co-Lin. He singled in the fifth and doubled in the seventh. It was Brown who scored the first run of the game on a passed ball in the bottom of the first. Brown scored a run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Choc Hubbard.

Shortstop Ryan Young was 2-for-4 for Co-Lin with a single and a double. Savage, Brown, Young, Hubbard and Whitfield all had one stolen base.

In the bottom of the fifth Co-Lin would have the bases loaded with one away, but come out of the inning with no runs scored. An RBI single by Jay King in the eighth would give the Rangers their final lead.

Co-Lin returns to action on Tuesday, April 1 when they travel to Jones for a divisional doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. Live audio of both games will be streamed at colinathletics.com.
