Loyd Star defeats Bogue Chitto

BOGUE CHITTO – The Loyd Star Lady Hornets escaped Bogue Chitto Thursday night with a 48-47 win over the Lady Cats in high school basketball action.

In boys’ action, the Hornets thumped the Bobcats 63-34.

In junior high action, the Bogue Chitto Bobcats and the Loyd Star Lady Hornets captured a win each.

Bogue Chitto will return to action Monday as the team travels to Enterprise to play four games starting at 4 p.m.

Loyd Star was originally scheduled to be in action today in Hattiesburg against North Forrest, but the game has been postponed until a later date. The Hornets and Lady Hornets will resume action in two weeks as they host Bogue Chitto for four games starting at 4 p.m.

Lady Hornets 48, Lady Cats 47

The Lady Cats and Lady Hornets renewed their basketball rivalry Thursday night. In the opening quarter, the Lady Cats would claim an early lead at 12-8. In the second period, the Lady Hornets battled back with a 16-13 run as BC carried a 25-24 lead into halftime.

Both teams scored 14 points each in the third frame, and in the fourth quarter the Lady Hornets put together a 15-8 run to secure the win over the Lady Cats.

Zariah Matthews led the Lady Cats with 15 points and five rebounds. Karlie Williams contributed with 11 points and two rebounds. Terrah Nelson had four points and two rebounds. Shakiriana Jefferson had two points and two rebounds. Lineka Newson had two points and six rebounds. Christian Black had one point and four rebounds.

Offensively for the Lady Hornets, Makenzie Smith was the top scorer with 15 points. Lydia Britt chipped in with 11 points. Hannah Dickerson had eight points. Jordan Shelby scored five points. Faith Berguron and Caylee Yarborough both had three points each. Toni Banks had two points.

Loyd Star 63, Bogue Chitto 34 

The Hornets quickly overpowered the Bobcats to claim a 40-11 halftime lead and cruised in the second half to secure the win.

Javion Beard pumped in a game high double-double of 21 points and 11 rebounds. Levi Redd netted 17 points and had 10 rebounds. Gregory Hooks provided eight points. Patrick Price scored six points. Dane Smith had seven points and Dawson Zumbro added two points.

Brandon Blackwell was the top scorer for BC with 12 points. Malik Richardson chipped in with 10 points. D.J. Nunnery scored seven points. Tyler Brumfield had three points and Henry Thomas scored two points.

In junior high action, the Loyd Star Lady Hornets defeated the Lady Cats 21-17.

Tyriana Brumfield led the Lady Cats with five points. Kayden McKnight had four points. Rainie Welch, Kayci Beth Wallace, Katelynn Palmer, and Kemiah Clay all had two points.

For the Lady Hornets, Whitney Watts led the team with eight points. Taylor Smith was able to get six points. Mallori Cade had three points. Tamara Townsend and Kelsie Foster had two points apiece.

In the boys’ contest, Bogue Chitto beat Loyd Star 39-27.

Josh Thomas led the Bobcats with 13 points. Koltin Roberts had nine points. Zach Upkins provided eight points. Lincoln Collins scored five points.

Tanner Watts was the top scorer for the Hornets with 12 points. Stephen Mills had five points. Robert Galindo had four points. Reese Dehart and Thomas Kelly both scored three points.
