Cobras rally to bite Bulldogs

MEADVILLE – The Wesson Cobras (12-7, 2-1) knocked off the Franklin County Bulldogs to claim a 68-57 win in Region 7-3A basketball action Tuesday night.

In girls’ action, the Lady Bulldogs outscored the Lady Cobras 20-5 in the third quarter to clinch a 39-21 victory.

Wesson will continue division action Friday as the Cobras and Lady Cobras host Port Gibson for three games. Junior varsity action begins at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity games at 6 and 7:30 p.m.

The Cobras and the Bulldogs battled in close contest in the first half as Wesson carried a slim 33-31 lead into halftime.

In the third quarter, the Bulldogs put together a 19-11 run to take over the lead at 50-44. In the fourth, the Cobras answered Franklin County’s challenge with a 24-7 explosion to reclaim the lead and secure the win.

Senior forward Anthony Jones powered the Cobras with 37 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Eric Rhymes contributed 17 points and was the leader on the boards with nine rebounds. Shemar Dickerson netted five points. Jermaine James scored three points. Cornelius Barlow, Will Hulon and Kendrick Brown finished with two points each. Hulon also helped on the boards with six rebounds.
