Cougars feast on Vicksburg Gators
MONTICELLO-Lawrence County handled Vicksburg 6-1 in Saturday-afternoon baseball action at Jimmie Davis Park. Three different LCHS pitchers combined on a 5-hitter as the Cougars cruised to a comfortable win.
With the victory, Josh Garrett’s Cougars improved to 12-4 overall. Lawrence County enters Tuesday’s division tilt with Purvis, with a 4-2 record in Division 7-4A play.
“We’re glad to get a win,” said Garrett, “but our intensity level wasn’t where it has to be in our upcoming division games. All three of our pitchers threw strikes and made them earn their bases. We pitched better than we hit or fielded today.”
Lawrence County struck for 3 in the bottom of the first. Josh Stephens started it with a 1-out single. Kody Smith and Logan Greenlee followed with doubles. Brandon Bullock finished the rally with a sacrifice fly to right field.
Vicksburg scratched 1 run in the top of the fourth, but LCHS got back 3 in the bottom of the inning. Kasey Durr triggered the rally with a double. Marcus Atterberry and Josh Stephens each had singles in the frame. The Cougars’ final run, in the seventh, came of a Gabriel Lewis RBI double.
Logan Greenlee started and worked the first 3 innings for Lawrence County. He allowed 1 hit, hit a batter, and struck out 2. Brennan Lang pitched the fourth and fifth innings. He allowed a run on 3 hits, and struck out 1. Josh Stephens went the final two innings. He pitched around 3 errors in two shutout innings. He gave up 1 hit and struck out 1.
Durr, Stephens, and second baseman Gabriel Lewis each had 2 hits to pace Lawrence County. Smith, Greenlee, and Atterberry each had 1.
Vicksburg got 2 hits from Marc Grace. Tyler Smith, Marcus Williams, and starting pitcher D.J. Lewis also hit safely. Lewis worked 4-plus innings before giving way to reliever Gage Ederington.
