Health clinic to be held for veterans

The G.V. Montgomery VA medical Center in Collaboration with the Lincoln County Veteran Service Office is hosting a health clinic for local Brookhaven residents. The clinic will provide information about how veterans can enroll in various benefits. The clinic will be held Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the VFW Post 2618 Industrial Park Road.

Curtis Oliver, veteran service officer and coast guard veteran, said there was a need to provide information about services to Lincoln County and surrounding areas. He added not only will the clinic inform veterans about benefits, it will let them know that there is a local veteran service office.

The event will also include a mobile health clinic that will offer basic screening.

Oliver said this is the first time there has been this type of outreach in the Brookhaven area. The concept was derived from a conversation among local vets about needs in the community. Oliver said it grew from there.

Services that will be provided at the clinic are: eligibility determination, registration, enrollment in MyHealthevet, physical exams, patient education, vet center information, benefits information, cemetery information, female veterans information and various other services.

Oliver suggests that veterans bring their DD214 papers and/or their veteran ID card to help with the process but encourages all veterans to come regardless.

The clinic officials will also be building a database with organizations that are promoting veteran outreach, such as local churches or civic groups. The database will be a collaboration of agencies that local veterans will be given access to as a resource. Oliver encourages any agency that has these type of services come to the clinic and register or contact the Lincoln County Veteran Service office.

For more information about the clinic contact Curtis Oliver at 601-455-7488, Dwayne Gill at 601-748-3428 or Belinda Okafor at 601-362-4471.
