Car hits gas line, causing leak

Authorities responded to a gas leak at a house on the corner of South Railroad Avenue and East Chippewa Street Wednesday afternoon.

Sylvester Williams said he was in the driveway of his friend’s home when the brakes went out on his car. The car then moved forward, colliding with the home’s gas line. The gas leak was audible within a hundred yards of the pipe. Williams immediately called the police.

Brookhaven firemen, police officers and an emergency responder arrived at the scene at 5:14 p.m. The group monitored the situation while waiting for Centerpoint Energy to shut off the pipe.

Clifford Galey, local emergency management director, said that Centerpoint Energy reported to him that there was also a leak in McComb Wednesday afternoon, so the crews had to determine which leak to respond to first.

Gas crews arrived at the scene more than an hour after the original report.

Officials cleared the scene at 8:18 p.m.
