DAILY LEADER / KATIE WILLIAMSON / Brookhaven Fire Captain Mark Porter, Firefighter Garrette Case and fire lieutenant Rhett Case open a fire hydrant in downtown Brookhaven.
Fire Chief Tony Weeks said they open every plug twice a year to flush out sediment and rocks that could damage the fire truck water pumps or clog the hydrants. He said firemen are also trimming any foliage that may have built up around the hydrants to make the units are more visible.
Hydrants will be opened across town for the next few months until each plug is tested. There are over 800 total hydrants in Brookhaven, and each one will be opened for ten minutes until the dirty water is flushed out.
