Lady Choctaws take down Judson to advance to NCCAA World Series

TROUTVILLE, Va. — The Mississippi College softball team advanced in the winner’s bracket of the NCCAA World Series with an 8-4 win over No. 1 Judson University on Wednesday afternoon at the Botetourt Sports Complex.

The Lady Choctaws (29-22) had defeated Oklahoma Wesleyan 10-1 earlier in the day and will now move on to face Oklahoma Christian (29-19) at 1:00 p.m. (CST) on Thursday afternoon.

The MC offense got things going in the third inning when junior Kimmie Conley led off with a single and pinch-runner Kaitlin Moak, of Brookhaven, came home to score on a single by senior Shay Mickens. Conley led the Lady Choctaws at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBI.

The Lady Eagles (30-16-1) answered back with a run in their half of the third, but the Lady Choctaws would respond with three runs in the fourth, started by a sacrifice fly by junior Ashley Subervielle to score senior Brooke Smitherman.

Junior Madison Oliver doubled home senior Karla Beth Hux, of Brookhaven, and Conley drove in Oliver with a single to give MC a 4-1 advantage.

In the fifth inning, MC would load the bases with no outs and seniors Macey Lee and Tori Bankston scored to push the lead to 6-1.

That would be all the offense senior Lacie Patterson (7-6) would need as she tossed her sixth complete game of the season, tying a season-high with seven strikeouts and just one walk.

Judson would cut into the lead with a run in the fifth, but MC answered with runs in the sixth and seventh innings as Bankston’s sac fly scored Mickens and Conley’s RBI double scored freshman Katherine Lee.

In the sixth inning, Mickens led off with a single and stole second base, tallying her 82nd career swipe, which ranks second in school history behind Jennifer Jones (2008-11), who had 84.

Sarah Friedlund hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning, but MC would hold on for the win and advance in the winner’s bracket.

Brianna Tennyson (18-10) took the loss for Judson, allowing 10 hits and eight earned runs over a complete game effort.
