Simpson Academy had its homecoming ruined last season when Brookhaven Academy shut them out 27-0 in Mendenhall. With revenge on their minds, the Cougars of Mendenhall returned BA’s opening kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown by Kyle Burney and never trailed in a 51-0 win on BA’s senior night at R.M. “Red” Stuard Field.

Simpson piled up 34 points in the first quarter with four rushing touchdowns as Burney led the charge with two rushing touchdowns of 70 and 34 yards. Quarterback Matthew Burney punched in a one-yard run and Tristian Cowen had a 12-yard rushing touchdown. Scott Johnson was 5-of-6 on the extra point attempts.

In the second period, Johnson nailed a 22-yard field goal to give Simpson Academy a 37-0 halftime lead.

In third and fourth frames, Cook Weathersby sprinted in a 41-yard rushing touchdown and Caleb Garner ran in a one-yard rushing touchdown.

Offensively, BA’s junior quarterback, Madison Smith, had 109 yards of total offense, but was picked off twice. Smith finished 10-of-25 for 93 yards and rushed for 16 yards on six carries.

Smith’s favorite target Friday night was junior receiver Fisher Warren with nine receptions for 77 yards.

For Simpson, Kyle Burney led the way with five rushes for 134 yards. Caleb Garner had three carries for 36 yards and Dylan Hallman had five rushes for 35 yards,

Matthew Burney completed two passes for 37 yards. Cullen Show was the top receiver with one catch for 25 yards.

Defensively, Connor Griffin and Carter Culbertson led BA with 5.5 tackles each. Fisher Warren finished with five tackles and had one tackle for a loss. Roger Rushing provided four tackles. J.T Cline and Grant James combined for seven tackles.

BA will be in action Friday for its final game of the season as they travel to Gallman to take on the Copiah Academy Colonels. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
