BC wins thriller over Loyd Star

BOGUE CHITTO – Senior Brock Roberts brought his “A” game on the mound for Bogue Chitto Friday night as the Bobcats won an offensive thriller 12-8 over their Lincoln County rivals the Loyd Star Hornets in the Lincoln County Invitational tournament.

“We are starting to play good all-around ball as a team,” said BC coach Russ Carter. “Brock Roberts pitched an excellent game for us and our guys did a great job backing him up defensively.

Loyd Star has a very good team and they are very competitive,” continued Carter. “Overall, I was very pleased with my team’s effort.”

Bogue Chitto will be in action Monday as they visit Monticello to take part in Lawrence County’s Spring Break Invitational. The Bobcats (1-2) tangle with Hazlehurst at 12:15 p.m.

Loyd Star (2-1) will also be in action at Lawrence County Monday. The Hornets battles North Pike at 2:30 p.m.

Bogue Chitto 12, Loyd Star 8

The Bobcats and Hornets renewed the rivalry in baseball Friday night as both teams brought plenty of excitement to their fans on a chilly late night game.

Bogue Chitto came out strong in the first half of the contest to capture a huge 9-1 lead in the first three innings of action.

Loyd Star battled back in the next three innings of action as they cut into BC’s lead 9-5, before the Bobcats responded with a three-run jolt in the bottom of the sixth inning.

In the top of the seventh inning, the Hornets refused to go down without a late rally as they pushed across three runs to trim BC’s lead to 12-8 but failed to inch closer as the Bobcats managed to obtain the last out.

Roberts was the winning pitcher for the Bobcats with 11 strikeouts and three walks. Nick Parker (2K, 2BB) pitched the final inning in relief for BC.

Levi Redd suffered the setback for the Hornets with one strikeout and one walk. Canon Travis (3K, 3BB) saw action in relief for Loyd Star.

“Our defense needs to play better behind our pitchers,” said Loyd Star coach Jared Britt. “Our pitchers threw really well tonight, but we did not back them up in field. Bogue Chitto’s pitcher Brock Roberts pitched a great game against us.”

Tucker Lamberts was the offensive leader at the plate for BC with five singles. Landon Roberts contributed a double and a single. Rudy Brumfield, Keith Wells and Brock Roberts provided a pair of singles each. Brooks Ingle had a double. Hitting safely were Joey Elliott and Steven Ginn.

Caleb Yarborough was the top hitter for the Hornets with two singles. Lane Rogers, Hayden Brownlee and Levi Redd hit safely.
